Dear Pam,
I have just come across your posting and I am also researching my husband's De Freitas family background. We use to think his great-grandmother was Lena Joseph, born about 1881,who married James Kennedy, and lived around Greymouth, New Zealand. We are now sure she was Eleanor Josa De Freitas, the 6th child of eight children of Antonio Josa De Feitas and Isobella Gascoyne who were married on 7 January 1864 in Auckland. Apparently Antonio was born about 1837 Ila Das Flores, Horta, Portugal and he came to New Zealand in 1862 and was naturalised in 1863. They seem to have Anglicised their name to Joseph and Pete recalls his maternal great-grandmother and grandmother speaking of their Portuguese background.
I have recently had contact with another Joseph who is from the De Freitas line living in Australia and he has forwarded interesting information. I would love to hear back from you and see if we can put together some of the puzzle.
