I found a great site that might help you in some of your research. http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/

This site has all the birth records and death records of anyone that was either born or died in California. It is a great start on researching in California.

The Portugese that arrived in the Bay Area usually came from Hawaii on or after 1898. That is the date that the US annexed Hawaii. The King of Hawaii offered the people of Madeira free transportation and a job in 1874.

Also, if you are interested in reading about, what may be the first Freitas, go to http://www.railsoft.com/roots

Good Luck
