Were your Frego families from France or Germany? My mother-in-law's family of Frekots moved from somewhere around Alsace/Lorraine sometime in the late 1700s, to the Banat region of Austria-Hungary. Their name was first Germanized and then Magyarized, and may originally have been Frego. My mother-in-law once met a Mr. Frego in South Carolina who had a huge database of his family and ancestors, who thought the Frekots were related. Does this sound familiar to you?
