Mysterious James D Freer, Martin Freer NY

I've been trying to connect an elusive branch of the Freers to the main Ulster County NY clan, but even the Freer family database can't place them. They are in the right place, right times, and even marry many known families from the Freer clan, but I'm stumped!

James D Freer b abt 1824 d. 1889
married Elizabeth Crapser (Libbie)
children William and Hannahette (Hannaette, Hanahette, Hettie, Etta, Ettie)

Morgan Crapser, Martin Freer and his wife Catherine and children Hannah, James and Henry

they all appear together in the 1880 census in Kingston NY, along with Ellsworth Crapser, Morgan Crapser

They are otherwise found in the censuses in Dutchess and Columbia Counties. Are they brothers? Who is the father? I could really use some help! And they need a place in the tree, poor guys.
