Believe you mistyped the date in Abbeville.
On 4/16/1787 Herod Freeman was still in Culpepper County VA. In 1790 Herod was a buyer at an Abbeville SC estate sale and was on the 1790 Census.
James Freeman was a strong circumstantial son of Herod and had a grandson Herod Henley Freeman - named for the two great grandfathers of H.H. Freeman.
