Reading various Alabama censuses:

Margaret Ann Golden is almost certainly the daughter of Shadrack/Shad/Shed Golden/Goldin and his first wife, listed as Charlotte Vickery by other researchers.

In the 1850 census, she is living, age 18 (b. 1832), with her father Shad and his second wife, Martha in Madison Co. Alabama. I checked the 1840 census to see if the daughters corresponded to the number shown in 1850, and they did- so Margaret was not a daughter in law, but a daughter.
I see in this census she has a sister Luvica age 7. Probably later, Alex. Freeman's wife with a name not that common.

In 1860, Shad and Martha with 4 children are still in Madison- Margaret not there.

Listed in the Alabama marriages is a marriage between Margaret Ann Golden and William Baker 20 Mar 1863 in Madison Co. Ala.

However in 1870, Margaret appears to be using her maiden name again and no sign of William. Possible that he was killed in the Civil War.
Looks like some of the children were hers, but see that there appears to be no marriage before her marriage to Wm Baker in 1863.
Jefferson was married in this census- as Bethanie is listed as "keeping house"- her parents living next door to them.

Rutha S Golden- I suspect- is actually Upha S. Golden who married Elias Robbins.

By 1880 Margaret, is listed as mother and her age far older than she was. Little Matilda may have died as she is not listed with the others.- she could have been a Baker baby.

Shad Golden must have died between 1860-1870 as Martha is living in Madison with several children in 1870.

In 1900 M "E" Baker, living with Ned in Texas says she had 3 children, born 3 living.

If you go to the Golden Family Genforum site, and put Newton Jefferson Golden in the top search box- you will see quite a discussion of Newton by other family members. It was about 7 years ago, but may be of interest.

Father of Margaret's children appears to remain a mystery
