Hi Don,
The text of the New York State historical marker in Orchard Park, Erie County, NY reads as follows:
FREEMAN HOMESTEAD
Elisha Freeman settled here 1810.This home was a meeting place for early settlers, visiting Quakers and Indian conferences.
Four neighboring homes were originally part of this complex.
During the Revolutionary War Stephen Freeman's home in Saratoga was used as General Burgoyne's headquarters.Later he joined his son Elisha here.
Elisha Freeman did not settle in Orchard Park until 1816 and he did not purchase the house in question in Orchard Park until 1822.
John Freeman leased Farm # 3, Great Lott 16 of the Saratoga Patent from General Philip Schuyler on August 2, 1769.Schuyler's copy of the lease is now the "Schuyler Papers" which are in the custody of the New York Public Library in New York City.
I am a descendant of Stephen Freeman not John Freeman, the Loyalist. Our common ancestor, 1716-James Freeman leased a farm in Great Lott 37 of the Saratoga Patent. He, his wife, and several of his descendants are buried in a small family graveyard Great Lott 37, i.e. present day Easton, Washington County, NY.
I have some more material, including a chain of title for Farm #3, Great Lott 16 and the chain of title for Farm # 4, Great Lott 16.Stephen's eldest son, Isaac Freeman, purchased Farm # 4, Great Lott 16 from his first cousins, Israel Baker, et ux, et al, in 1836.On September 19, 1777, the fighting started on John Freeman's tenant farm and then spread west through Farm # 4 (then leased by M. Marshall) to Farm # 5, then believed to have been leased by the Whitesides family.
I shall send you some additional material via e-mail.I have been researching a community history of the colonial population of the Saratoga Patent. So I have acculated a database that is 260 pages long at present.
The Albany County records were not destroyed in the War of 1812.
More later,
Leslie
