Bonnie,
Lincoln County is just where the map pointed you, above Augusta, Georgia and close to the South Carolina line. Many settlers came first to Edgefield, SC, then to the Lincoln County and Augusta areas. There must not have been much opportunity there, because they then migrated to the west. Arthur and Alexander Frazier went first to Lincoln County, but then Arthur ended up in Harris County, where he lived until he died on the farm he established there.Harris is just above Muscogee County and the Columbus, Georgia area on the western line of Georgia.Columbus became a center for trade because of its position on the Chattahoochee which fed into the ports on the Gulf.Arthur's offspring migrated therefore to Columbus, but the farms in Harris County and Lee County (to the west of Columbus) around Smith Station (adjacent to Phenix City, AL) were vibrant parts of their livelihood. After the Civil War, John Anderson Frazer, II returned to his "plantation" on the Chattahoochee at Smith Station and turned it into a totally self-sustaining plantation, raising all the food he needed for his family of eight children, all of whom he managed to send through college. He also started the first hardware store in Columbus, which his son Lute later bought from him.
