Hi, Bonnie,

We may not be connected then, because I have located copies of NC wills and land records and corresponded with 2 cousins, one in NC and one in Georgia (actually a 3rd cousin in Columbus, GA I met who was collecting data for admission to Colonial Dames and had to substantiate everything) who support the connection I have made. Also, I have a copy of the family Bible pages you mention and they were mixed up because of Arthur's 2 marriages. It took me quite awhile to sort through the information and find the truth. Since Arthur's 1st wife Elizabeth Knott died in childbirth of John Haywood in 1798 (the family Bible indicates he is Polly's son, but since Arthur and Polly didn't marry until 1800, this is impossible), and Arthur married Polly Goodrum in NC (I have the record of that marriage), from whence came John Anderson, I in 1800, Arthur may have returned to NC after Elizabeth's death (she was also from NC originally) for help with his children and then come back to Georgia after he and Polly welcomed John Anderson, I.

It is not unusual for oral history and family Bibles to be wrong, as family history often gets twisted in the retelling and the folks who lived in the 1600-1800s were not highly educated, if at all (they were afterall farmers). I followed a blind alley on the Frazier/Frazer line for almost 8 years because of oral history which placed them as being descended from Sewell Frazer and immigrating to Charleston, SC, then settling first in Edgefield, SC.

Likewise, I wasted 2 years looking for my Grandfather Darden in LaFayette, AL, traveling to the Federal Archives in Atlanta during the evening to search census records, because my aunts insisted he was born and raised there. I finally (through a well-researched book and DAR records) linked him to the Darden line that settled in Georgia in 1771 and fought in the Revolutionary War from Georgia, and everything fell into place. I have since learned to be skeptical! My Darden cousins, who incidentally have done no research of their own, still swear that the Dardens came from Alabama.

One of the confusing things is that Alabama was part of Georgia until after the Revolutionary War, plus LaFayette is just over the line.

By the way, thanks for the info about the Indian tribes. That is one area I have not explored, and it helps to explain some of the migration patterns.

Cousin Marilyn
