Dear Cousin Marilyn: Thanks for your reply. The strong oral history of our family indicates our line (John) first came to America in 1747 to Wilmington, up the Cape Fear River to a place called Maxton "named for all the escaped Scotties with a Mac. to their name". The location was one and one-fourth miles southwest of Maxton in Scotland Co. (formerly part of Richmond Co. and on the SC border). It is assumed that he was older and that at least one grown son by the name of William came with him. The first William had a son named William who had a son named Alexander with known birthdate of 13 Sept 1771. This is the Alexander that came to Chambers County. The story continues in that Alexander and his large family from NC headed for Lowndes Co. Alabama in 1836 to join his daughter, Margaret (Peter) McFarland. The Indians were acting up and they turned around at the river (Chatahoochee) and settled in Meriwether Co. GA for up to 3 years before finally settling in Chambers Co. about 3 miles north of LaFayette in a place called Buffalo. In thinking about John A. Frazer 1800-1861, the census from 1850, 1860 indicates his birth state as NC. Our oral history also states "The Frazer family at Auburn and Opelika used to say that they were of the same family, also the ones at Union Springs, Ala." (all of this information is from Dr. Benjamin Frazer of LaFayette, AL, 1888-1981). I'm not sure when Harris County (western border of Georgia on the Chatahoochee) and Lincoln County (eastern border with SC) were opened up to settlers. Would assume that Lincoln was opened first as Harris was part of the Creek Indian lands opened in early 1830's. Would like to continue to make contact and share information, especially the documentation that you may have for the John A. Frazer family of Chambers County. I have tried to follow some of the children in the census, but haven't gotten too far. One of your earlier entries mentions a person in Opelika with a family Bible that may hold some clues. Thanks, again. Bonnie Boggs Notify Administrator about this message?
