Simon Fraser the explorer was a clerk for the Northwest Fur Company, still a teenager when sent to a post in Atabasca area of Northwest Canada. Little is written of Simon's experiences until he became known for his explorations some years later, but it appears that he had country wives and country children. Some of Simon's records have been published in the book "Simon Fraser Letters & Journals, 1806-1808". In December 1806 Simon writes to his friend McDougall, "I am glad to hear that the children are well taken care of. I assure you that I am nowise concerned about them as they are under your protection." On January 31,1807, Simon again writes to McDougall and says, "Anything that the children are in want of and that can be had please give it to them & charge the same to my acct." On February 1, 1807, Simon writes to his friend John Stuart and says, "Yes my friend, I have once more entered upon the matrimonial state..." It has also been written that Simon had son's born to a country wife in 1815-1817, and named one Peter John Fraser. (the writer offers no documentation for this information.) We know Simon retired from the fur trade to live in Ontario and was married there in the 1820's at the age of 44 producing a number of children, but who were Simon's country wive's and what more is known of the children born to him 1790's-until he left the Northwest? Any information on these descedents (born Atabasca,Manitoba/Saskatchewan area) of Simon Fraser will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Georgi Notify Administrator about this message?
