You can see a radius of forty miles from Castle Frankenstein which sits atop 1160 foot Magnet Mountain above the village of Nieder-Beerbach. There is an older, inner castle where the older branch of the fmaily lived, and a newer outer castle where the younger branch of the Frqankensteins lived. It lies within the German state of Hesse. The nearest big city is Darmstadt and the state was at one time the principality of Hessen-Darmstadt.Small towns nearby are Traisa, Ober-Beerbach, Nieder-Beerbach, Eberstadt, Pfungstadt, and Griesheim. If you go down to the baks of the Rhine River, it is nearest the smaller towns of Gernsheim, Oppenheim, Nierstein, and Ginsheim, with the next larger city along the Rhine Mainz. If you continue up the river, you come to the major city of Worms and thereafter to the great city of Mannheim. Frankenthal lies across the valley from Mannheim.
A branch of the barons von Frankenstein settled in Sibiu, in Transylvania. There are effigies of them in the church there. But the main body of the barons von Frankenstein always lived along the Rhine. The fmaily can be traced back to Arbogast (the name is still current in the family), the vistorious jouster in a tournament of knights at Cologne (Koln in German) in 948 AD. Argobast's descendants for the first few generation, and ancestors of the Frankensteins, were surnamed Lutzelbach: the Lutzerbachs of Odenwald.
Through a marriage with the Weisterstadts, the Lutzelbachs acquired the Frankenstein or "stone of the Franks" which, can also be translated "rock of the Franks" atop Magnet Mountain, above the vilage of Nieder-Beerbach, and that is where they built Castle Frankenstein.
Other places in the general area are named Frank for the same reason: that Franks from Koln settled there. Thus there are: Frankenthal, Frankenhausen, and Frankenwald also. The duchy of Franconia and the kingdom of France were named after the Franks. Charlemagne (Karl der Gross in German) was King of the Franks and 1st German emperour circa 800 AD. When he died, his sons divided his kingdom, which created both France and Germany.
The coat-of-arms of the Frankensteins is a white shield, on it is a red double war hatchet, without a handle, and it is pointing upwards to the left. Above the shield there is a helmet and on top of the helmet is a crest of the wings of a swan with clover leaves set against a gold background.
