The name is of Jewish heritage but not necessarily the specific family.Other factors have to be weighted in to find more clues to the family background. It helps to learn something about Jewish customs and history. The only 100% way of knowing if a family was Jewish is to find an ancestor's name in the Inquisition records. There are many Francos mentioned both in the records and in Jewish Spanish/Portugese history. What I mean about not necessarily the family being Jewish is because sometimes Indians and Blacks or mulatos who were servants or slaves adopted the last names of their owners or bosses. They normally had no last names of their own.But then again many thus also converted to Judiasim. Also how much intermarriage occurred many times was affected by were and among whom they lived. In places like New Mexico where the Indians were friendly there would be more likely to be more intermarriage than in South Texas where the Indians were very hostile. In villages that were isolated and where most of the poplulation was composed of other Jews, the family will maybe still be very Jewish. There are many sites on the Internet that can give you more info.
