A kind of "godfather" in good sens before Revolution:
University of Paris was the protector of high qulity professions.(books, jewels etc)
They were called "ruled professions" or "corporations"(french meaning)
This was banned by revolution with the Decree Le Chapelier
(a kind of Malbury v Madison)
Le Grand Messager was in in charge of banking (social welfare) the students and delivering them mail.
