Marselas, Marselis, French Huguenots who came thru Netherlands to the USA

(Looks like my father was correct that they came thru The Netherlands-name change and all.

I bet the Marselas are connected here! Too many things fall into place-Pennsylvania-Corwainer-Netherlands-Originally French....

Our family has John Marselas born 1780 supposedly Maryland-
He served in The War of 1812 with the Fells Point Rifles. He fought in the Battle of North Point which saved Baltimore. There is a James Marselas who fought with him also. Don't know his relationship.

These Marselas were cordwainers-In Baltimore and DC they had shoe stores- I believe John's middle name was Edason-

He married a woman named Elizabeth from Pennsylvania. So there is some kind of connection to PA.

My father said they were originally French Huguenots who escaped up thru The Netherlands-I don't know how long they were there.--

My father also said the name changed-

Their name Marselas is spelled in various ways-

I saw the spelling of Montgomery Gum Marselas, and PENNSYLVANIA-

Anyone see any attachments?

I appreciate any and all help. I would really like to honor this man (my 3gggf) in finding his genealogy for his service in the war.

From another Genforum site:

here is a base note from Shannon which caught my eye:

As I went back, I the last note on this genealogy was: Sources:

1. Title: Notes by Laurel Shannon Albritton Gorman
Text: If the family of Marcelis Pieterse van Marselis was originally from France, as stated by my grandmother, then this would make sense. He could easily have been of the family of Pieterse from Marseille, France.
