You first need to find out where exactly he came from.
Once you know that, you can write to the Mairie of the commune in which he came to ask for his birth records (write in French, there are template letters available if you don't speak it, include return postage via international reply coupon, it takes them usually a couple months to respond).
Alternatively, if you have access to an LDS centre you can order microfilms of these same records to look through. Some departmental archives have records online but they are usually not generally indexed so you will still need to know where they came from (there are ten-year indexes for each commune so it is okay if you don't know exactly when someone was born).
It would be a good idea to work out whether or not they married in France as well - I take it all their children were born in the US?
