That would depend on which part of Alsace-Lorraine he was from.At the time, though, most of this area was under French control (until 1870) - however, some areas have always been more German in terms of the language and culture of the local residents.
From www.geopatronyme.com, in the 1891-1915 period, this surname is found in Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin (the two departments which make up Alsace).11 births in Haut-Rhin and 3 in Bas-Rhin, the towns are:
Leymen, Zillisheim, Mulhouse and Bourgfelden in Haut-Rhin,
and Osthouse, Matzenheim in Bas-Rhin.
