Thanks once again for your interest and help.
Unfortunatley, this is where l've hit a brick wall. I was hoping to be able to locate Joseph's parents. I know from what my father told me that Joseph & Louisa were not married, although Louisa took Joseph's surname. I also searched the BMD index to see if l cound find a marriage listing.
Her her maiden name is shown as "Louisa Cheffey, formally Young" on the birth certificates, l have copies for all their 8 children.
I also have a copy of Joseph's death certificate. He died in 1936, aged 92.
There is no Parish records for Joseph & his parents in Dorset. I'm still waiting for a reply from a cousin who apparently knows which part of France Joseph's father had lived.
I appreciate your comments that Cheffey is a made-up name. I wondered about it myself, as there are many different spellings - Cheffey, Cheffy, Cheffie, Chiffey & Chivy.
I received an email from someone with Chaffey ancestors who thought there maybe a link between Chaffey & Cheffey. I doubt it, as Chaffey has French origins long ago, but is recognised as an old Dorset name.
Well, l won't give up my search just yet. Something may eventually turn up.
