Hello, I was so excited about someone being aware of Charbonnet that I rummaged through my notes and found items of interest but confused her with a violinist that was Jersey born. However, there was a musical album published in the late 1800's which gave a small bio on her (go to the National Library of Australia catalogue and search under music...there's even a pic of her quite young). She was born in Cincinatti Ohio in 1860 and aged 15 after the death of her father (Amable Charbonnet, who was chief justice of New Caledonia) she was forced to make music her professsion. Moved to Paris and was accepted into the Paris Conservatoire and studied paino under de Coupe. Debut in Sydney in august 1878. Then toured Melbourne and New Zealand and was pianiste to the Carlotta Patti tour. 1882 she settle in Sydney and founded a conservatoire along Parisian lines for Piano, vln, vln-celo, organ , harmony and vocal singing.
She went bak to Paris and became a music critic.
The NSW wales has archives from one of her grandchildren including Wooster material but the items have to be asked for by corresponding with the curator as the collection is under a copyright caveat. The NSW librray dod have a pi of her mother (on line to see) and of her father (not online though) by Pommerac, a celebrated Parisian miniaturist sothe Charbonnet must have been in Paris prior to the USA. What is your interest inAlice?
