Thank you, Pierre. The family was from Durham, England, descendants of William the Conqueror--family name of Ralph or William Eure. On the tombstones it was written in Latin, Ewer, and is both pronounced like in English Your or Youreeeeeeee or Eurie or Eurey or Youree in Louisiana. Some dropped the E and became Ure or Urey. There are a few Eures in the Nancy area in the LDS microfische, and legend has it they left Marseilles and/or Rochelle around 1690 with the Anabaptists and Huegenots. Others may have joined in the French and Indian War and landed up in the Albermarle area of Virginia and North Carolina--Gates County.I am the grandmother of baby Eure in Mississippi, the descendants of John Beaman Eure, a Civil War Hero. I found his family in a German church in Frederick Maryland about the time of the French and Indian War, c. 1760 with the name of Oehler with my German family of Shrivers and Ohrendorffs or Ornduffs also in America like the Eures from 1690. Have found Eures in Nova Scotia c. 1650 and Quebec. There was both a Thomas Ewer in Plymouth that was exiled from the Puritan community and he might be the same Thomas Ewer of Barnstable, Massachusetts, c. 1600-1640.Apparently, there are no records from the Caribbean. We are also told that the Monet Estate was the Eure Villa, like the River.Someone in genealogy says they found a 45 page reprint on the History of the Eures and I'm hoping they will come back on line to get that, and some of the mystery will be resolved on the history of the line that is now in Southern Virginia and Halifax, North Carolina area and Hattiesburg, Mississippi.I am divorced from my children's father, but I was very proud of my three Eure children, all beautiful, fiercely independent and talented. My Mother was a Texan and so, I'm not as shy as the Eures, as Texans are inclined to be super friendly by nature.Thank you for responding. When I was in Paris, I went into the cemeteries looking for Eures without any luck and I did see the little historic Eure Hotel. That was fun.
If ever I get rich, I was going to rebuild as a tourist attraction, Monet's pink villa and gardens in Texas or Costa Rica.Americans love the Water Lilies Paintings! I saw one in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, which I believe has just been renovated.
Were you able to find any living Devereaux? In the phone book?Have a nice weekend. Some people think this is a related family.
