Jim,
I have located Samuel Dell Foxx's WWI draft card from 1917 (When Jimmie was a young boy). He signs his name with two X's on that card. Jimmie's name was always spelled with two X's. His father obviously spelled it with two x's long before Jimmie was famous. I don't know where the extra X came in, but it was already present long before Jimmie hit it big!
