Norman Palmer Fox was born on February 5, 1927 in Canby, Minnesota to Edward (Mike) and Anna Peterson Fox. He grew up on the family farm and attended County School District # 68 and graduated from Canby High School in 1945. Norman was drafted to the United States Army on June 21, 1945 and served as a Medic in Germany. Following his discharge on April 19, 1947 he returned to the family farm. On January 13, 1954 he and Lavina Abraham were married at St. Peters Church in Canby. Following their marriage, they farmed near Canby for five years. In 1960 they moved to New Ulm, Minnesota where Norman worked at AMPI Creamery and for Kraft Foods. In 1961 Norman went to work at Sears and Roebuck retail store and later became manager. In 1973 they moved to Slayton and purchased the Gambles Store. Norman later worked as a salesman and assistant manager at M & M Distributing in Slayton until his retirement in 2005. Norman passed away on June 30, 2009 surrounded by his loving family at his home in Slayton at the age of 82. Norman was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Slayton and served as President of the Finance Committee. He also served on the Church Council and as usher. Norman was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Slayton VFW Post # 6233. Norman served on the Zoning Commission for six years. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, woodcarving, gardening, fishing and Sudoku puzzles.
Survivors include his wife, Lavina Fox of Slayton, nine children and their spouses, Perry and Wendy Fox of Woodbury, Linda and Doug Hillenbrand of Rochester, Douglas and Lori Fox of New Ulm, Cathy and Kevin Dillon of Rochester, Linnae and Keith Engesser of Tracy, Richard and Heidi Fox of Mahtomedi, David Fox of Minneapolis, Michelle and Mitch Oyen of Rochester, and Nathan and Tina Fox of Woodbury, 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two sisters and one brother, Donna Dwinell of Monroe, WA, Virgil Fox and his wife, Viola of St. Leo, MN, and Vivian Abraham and her husband, Ralph of Dawson, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Charles Fox, Marvin Fox, Ray Johnson, Gordon Johnson, and Lawrence Johnson, one brother–in-law, Lawrence Dwinell, and two sister-in-laws, Selma Johnson and Martha Fox.
Memorial Services
St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, MN on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 11:00 AM with Fr. Patrick Arens officiating. The organist is Judy Andrews. The song leader is Sheila Crowley with special music by Jim Klepper. The honorary pallbearers are Jeff Abraham, Rodney Abraham, Greg Fox, Kevin Rueckert, Larry Abraham, Terry Eischans, and Dennis Kockelman. There will be a private family interment.
