Scotland origins.... Fowle to Fowler

My ancestor is ggggrandfather John Fowler, b 1740 Scotland, d New York abt 1785. He m. Ann Eliza Keith b 1743. I don't know if they were married in Scotland or America. I have no information on the Keith family.
It has been said that our line had occupations from lawyers, politicians, master carpenters and the name originally was Fowle. I've found the Woburn MA line quite interesting.
John & Ann had two sons, William b. 1799, and my gggrandfather John Jr. b. 1782. John Jr. m. Elizabeth Howey, lived in New York, Ohio, Indiana & California. John Jr. occupation is listed as tailor and tavern owner at another time.
Grateful for any clues.
