Pioneer Jean-Francois Lemire married Marie-Francoise Foucault-dit-Courchesne-Lefrancois. Their sons took on various “dit” (aka) names as was the custom in those days.
1. Son Jean-Baptiste Lemire born 08 Sep 1707 at Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC, eventually took on his Mother’s name Foucault. PRDH list him as “Jean-Baptiste Foucault-Lemire. Since it is his aka name and he was baptized Lemire, I reversed Foucault-Lemire to Lemire-dit-Foucault so that all the descendants of Jean Lemire and Louise Marsolet-dit-St.Agnan fall together. PRDH must have found that Jean-Baptiste used Foucault in documents more often then Lemire. He may have used the Foucault name in the baptismal of his children, at their marriages, in census, etc.
2. Joseph Lemire-dit-Marsolet born on 14 Feb 1705 took on the dit name Marsolet from his Grandmother Louise Marsolet-dit-St.Agnan.
3. It does not appear that Antoine Lemire or Modeste Lemire took on an aka name. At least PRDH did not record one for them.
4. I have no idea where the dit names for his sons Rene Lemire-dit-Gonneville and Alexis Lemire-dit-Gaucher come from.
When the father took on a dit name it was often used by their descendants. Chances are if you see the name Gonneville it will lead to Rene and if you see Gaucher it will lead to Alexis. They all go to Pioneer Jean Lemire and Louise Marsolet-dit-St.Agnan.
