OBITUARIES:
Kenneth Roger Cole
(ROANOKE) Services for Kenneth Roger Cole, 59, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Aug.
1, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Billy
Pemberton officiating. Burial followed at Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mr. Cole died Saturday, July 29, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Survivors include his father, George Cole of Roanoke; two sisters, Patricia
Cole of Roanoke and Elizabeth Winburn of Niceville, Fla.; one brother, Richard
Cole of Gainesville, Ga.; and four nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were David Rice, Harold Elliott, Gerald Knight, Peter Knight,
Scott Winburn and LeRoy Cofield.
Mr. Cole was born July 20, 1947, son of George and Olive Moore Cole. He was
a graduate of Auburn University, a member of Maplewood Baptist Church, and had
been employed as an electrical engineer with Alabama Power. Mr. Cole retired on
disability in his late 30s. He was active in all sports during his high school
years at Handley.

Jeanie Connie Hill
(WOODLAND) Services for Jeanie Connie Hill, 54, of Woodland were Sunday,
July 30, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Ava United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard
Smith and the Rev. David Daniel officiating. Burial was in Rocky Branch Baptist
Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Hill died Friday, July 28, at her home.
Mrs. Hill is survived by one son, Matthew Doyle Ray Hill of Shaw Air Force
Base, S.C.; four sisters, Martha Woodall of Cornelia, Ga., Bonnie Sue Turner of
Atlanta, and Mary Connan and Laurove Chastain of Helen, Ga.; and two brothers,
Jimmy Miller of Commerce, Ga., and Dickie Lee Miller of Cornelia.
Pallbearers were Chad Wysner, Dean Wysner, Lamar Scott, Larry Bowen, J.R.
Fincher and Dale Lovvorn.
Mrs. Hill was born July 10, 1952, daughter of David Paul and Christine Bell
Miller. She has been a waitress in food service and had worked at a poultry
farm.Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Ray Hill; two
brothers, Ted and Paul Miller; and one sister, Arlevia Gunter.

Harris Fred Kitchens
(ROANOKE) Services for Harris Fred Kitchens, 89, of Roanoke were Saturday,
July 29, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tim

Mr. Kitchens died Thursday, July 27, at Russell Medical Center, Alexander
City.
Survivors include his wife, Sybil Daniel Kitchens of Roanoke; two daughters,
Karen Windsor of Roanoke and Alice Faye Berry of Lake City, Fla.; six
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Sean Sikes, Hunter Sikes, Daniel Dudley, Rodney Knott Jr.,
Chuck Dudley and Ron Jewell.
Mr. Kitchens was born Nov. 1, 1916, son of James Fred and Ruby Ann Nobley
Kitchens. He was a member of First Church of God and had worked in the card
room for Handley Mills.Mr. Kitchens served in the United States Army during
World War II.

Bonnie Lee Shelnutt
(ROANOKE) Services for Mr. Bonnie Lee Shelnutt, 67, of Roanoke will be
Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Taylor's Crossroads Church of Christ,

cemetery.
Mr. Shelnutt died Monday, July 31, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Moore Shelnutt of Roanoke; three
sisters, Carolyn Johnson of Lanett and Abigail Strain and Sara Williamson of
Roanoke; three brothers, Barrett Shelnutt, Edward Shelnutt and William
Shelnutt, all of Roanoke; a special niece, Lindsey Puckett; two special great-
nephews, Hunter Payne Williamson and Joseph Jackson Puckett; and several other
nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shelnutt was born April 7, 1939, son of Corbin Lee and Elizabeth Key
Shelnutt. He was a member of Taylor's Crossroads Church of Christ.

Robert Richard Jenkins
(WEDOWEE) Services for Robert Richard Jenkins, 68, of Wedowee were Friday,
July 28, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Caver's Grove Christian Church, with the Rev.

Mr. Jenkins died Tuesday, July 25, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Mr. Jenkins is survived by his wife, Emmalene Boyd Jenkins of Wedowee; three
daughters, Mary Smith of Columbus, Ga., Jan Bentley and Angie Caldwell; three
sons, Robert Ricky Jenkins of Columbus, Freddie Jenkins of North Carolina and
Jeffrey Jenkins of Columbus; four brothers, Alfred Jenkins, Jamie Jenkins,
Dennis Jenkins and Harold Jenkins, all of Vermont; 12 grandchildren; six great-
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Robert Jenkins, Brent Hurston, Timmy Jenkins, Butch
Costley, Jake Jenkins and Robert Higgins.
Mr. Jenkins was born April 13, 1938, son of Alfred Mason and Hester Ruth
Whipple Jenkins. He was a maintenance worker for Randolph Appliance and a
member of the Minnite Association. Mr. Jenkins was preceded in death by one
step-daughter, Joan Stewart; and one brother, Roland Jenkins. Flowers will be
accepted or donations may be made to Caver's Grove Christian Church.

Ray Brown
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Ray Brown, 74, of the Hillcrest community in LaGrange, died
Sunday, July 23, 2006, at West Georgia Medical Center.
A native of Randolph County, Mr. Brown was the son of the late Rufus Earl
Brown and the late Lura Johnson Brown. He lived in LaGrange most of his life,
was retired from Signal Knitting and owned and operated Water Wheel Antiques in
LaGrange, and was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Melody Macon of Gainesville, Ga., and Karol
Brown of Hogansville, Ga.; one son, Randall Brown of LaGrange; six
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Meadoway Gardens in
LaGrange with the Rev. Max New officiating.

Luther Dwight `Pete' Baker
(ROANOKE) Services for Luther Dwight "Pete" Baker Sr., 85, of Roanoke will
be Wednesday Aug. 2, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Roanoke First United Methodist Church,
with the Rev. John Mann and the Rev. Paul Messer officiating. Burial will
follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mr. Baker died Monday, July 31, at Traylor Nursing Home.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Denson Baker of Lineville; two sons,
Dr. L. Dwight Baker Jr. of Dothan and Jerry Albert Baker of Birmingham; five
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a stepson, Greg Denson of Lineville; two
step-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; and two cousins.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Irvin, Spec Bonner, B. Jones, Jerry Cotney,
George Robinson and David Denton. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Bible
Class of the First Methodist Church.
Mr. Baker was born Sept. 17, 1920, in Roanoke and was a lifelong resident.
Mr. Baker was a veteran of World War II, serving in Italy and North Africa. He
was an employee of Alabama Power Company for several years, and when his father
died he took over his shoe sales and repair business. For 40 years he operated
Baker's Shoe Shop until his retirement. Mr. Baker was a faithful member of
Roanoke First United Methodist Church. He was very devoted to his family and
grandchildren. Following his retirement, he enjoyed watching baseball,
traveling and fellowship with friends.
Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Carter and Myrtice
Chewning Baker; and his first wife, Mae Harris Baker.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist
Church of Roanoke.

Bernard Douglas Fuller
(ROANOKE) Services for the Rev. Bernard Douglas Fuller, 77, of Roanoke were
Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.
Bill Hindley and the Rev. Frank Foster officiating. Burial was at Pleasant
Grove Christian Church Cemetery.
Rev. Fuller died Saturday, Aug. 5, at Traylor Nursing Home.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Fuller; one daughter, Scarlett Nichols of
Roanoke; one son, Bernard Fuller Jr. of Cartersville, Ga.; two sisters, Sylveen
Vinson of Pensacola, Fla., and Mary Stewart of Gainesville, Fla.; and three
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Wallace Burson, Chuck Marcum, Brent Fuller, Tommy Mayfield
and T.J. Mayfield.
Rev. Fuller was born April 19, 1929, son of Mogan Mason and Lois Belle Smith
Fuller. He was a member of Roanoke Church of the Nazarene, a Navy war veteran,
a minister of several churches, and had worked for WELR for 36 years.

Patricia McCormick
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Patricia McCormick, 50, of LaGrange, Ga., died at her home
Monday, July 31, 2006.
Mrs. McCormick was born March 15, 1956, in Randolph County, daughter of the
late Elbert and Bernice Helms Brand. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life
and was Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, Albert Lee McCormick Jr.; sons, Randolph Ray
Poole Jr., Donald McCormick and Donald McCormick; and daughter, Wendy Waters,
all of LaGrange; sister, Patsy Becton of Newnan, Ga.; brothers, Robert
Cornelius of Corapeake, N.C., and Johnny Cornelius of Savannah, Ga. She was
preceded in death by a son, Christopher Ray Poole.
No services are planned at this time.

Willie Bradford Westbrook
(ROOPVILLE, Ga.) Services for Willie Bradford Westbrook, 69, of Roopville,
Ga., were at noon on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Oak Grove AME Church, Newell.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Westbrook died Sunday, July 30, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton,
Ga.
Pallbearers were nephews and friends. Nieces and great-nieces served as
flower girls.
Mr. Westbrook was born in Wedowee on March 23, 1937, son of the late Louis
and Maryetta Westbrook.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Westbrook; a daughter, Laverna W.
Chambers; a son, Willie B. Westbrook Jr.; four grand-daughters; three sisters,
Eris Houston and Alice Delaney of Heflin and Mary Elston of Kansas City, Mo.;
two brothers, L.C. Billingsley and Tommie Westbrook of Atlanta; and a host of
sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was
preceded in death by five sisters, Marie Nunn, Jessie May Nunn, Ione Westbrook,
Rebel Dupree and Idales Billingsley; and four brothers, Taylor, Rufus, Neal and
A.C. Westbrook.

James Marvin Baldwin
(WOODLAND) Services for James Marvin Baldwin, 69, of Woodland were Sunday,

Mr. Baldwin died Friday, Aug. 4, at Wedowee Hospital.
Mr. Baldwin is survived by his, wife, Rudean Mulkey Baldwin of Woodland;
three daughters, Patricia Dialene Thompson of Hogansville, Ga., Joyce Wallace
of Baton Rouge, La., and Kathy Ferrell of Flowery Branch, Ga.; two sons,
Kenneth Baldwin and Keith S. Baldwin of Carrollton, Ga.; one brother, Aaron
Baldwin of Roanoke; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Baldwin was born Oct. 24, 1936, son of Dorsey B. and Mazzie McDaniel
Baldwin. He was a member of Woodland Church of God and had worked as a weaver-
fixer for Uniroyal Goodrich for 32 years. Mr. Baldwin was preceded in death by
his parents; one sister, Beulah Baldwin; and one brother, Marion Baldwin.

Mr. Sprayberry died Wednesday, Aug. 2, at LaGrange Hospice.
Survivors include two daughters, Velma Lovin and Susan Monroe of LaGrange;
three sons, Billy Wayne Sprayberry and Lonnie Junior Sprayberry of LaGrange and
Paul Howard Sprayberry of Huguley; one sister, Lucille Wilkinson of
Douglasville, Ga.; one brother, Raymond Sprayberry of Bowdon, Ga.; 14
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Sprayberry was born June 17, 1920, son of Luther and Nancy Burdette
Sprayberry. He was a member of Standing Rock Assembly of God and had been a
heavy equipment operator for Keeble Construction. Mr. Sprayberry served in the
United States Air Force during World War II. He was preceded in death by his
parents; his wife, Frances Carter Sprayberry; and one son, Edward Leon
Sprayberry.

Fred Andrews
(WEDOWEE) Fred Andrews, 71, of Wedowee died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006.
Services will be Saturday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m. at Union Chapel United
Methodist Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. William W. Crawford officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Earme Andrews of Chicago; his mother, Lula
Andrews of Wedowee; two sons, Fred Andrews Jr. of Dayton, Ohio, and Fredrick
Andrews of Chicago; two daughters, Leslie Andrews of Chicago and Maria Andrews
of Dayton; a brother, Larry Andrews of Franklin, Ga.; and two sisters, Mary
Clyde Marable of LaGrange, Ga., and Edith Johnson of Wedowee. He was preceded
in death by a sister, Evelyn Andrews; and two brothers, Gene Andrews and John
Andrews.
Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service from 10 a.m. until
6 p.m. on Friday. The body will be placed in the church one hour before
services.

Joseph Howard Pearl Sr.
(OWENSBORO, Ky.) Joseph Howard Pearl Sr., 76, of Owensboro, Ky., died
Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at Owensboro Medical Health System.
Born Jan. 19, 1930, to the late Jessie and Oda Lucas Pearl, he was a member
of Precious Blood Catholic Church; retired from Fields Packing where he worked
for 39 years; was an army veteran of the Korean War earning the Purple Heart;
and was a member of AMVETS, DAV, and a life member of the VFW. Mr. Pearl
enjoyed gardening, his Model T Ford, NASCAR, watching "Wheel of Fortune;" and
spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Pearl was preceded in death by his
first wife, Artie Brown Pearl, in 1985 and brothers James Pearl and Jessie
Pearl.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Teena Kay Simpson Pearl; children
Pam Pearl, Buddy Pearl, Cody Pearl and Tim Pearl of Owensboro, Rodger Pearl of
Roanoke, and Emily Pearl of Huntsville; nine grandchildren; five step-
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; brothers John
Pearl of Owensboro and Charles Pearl of Anniston; and a sister, Mary Osborne of
Southgate, Calif.
Services were at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Glenn Funeral Home,
followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW
Post 696.

Alcocer and Nora Alcocer, both of Puerto Rico; a son, Frank Alcocer of Roanoke;
three sisters, Yolanda Weetman of Wedowee, Millie Brown of Oxford and Iris
Alcocer of Puerto; a brother, Luis R. Alcocer of Puerto Rico; three
grandchildren, sever-al nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.
A Puerto Rico native, Mr. Alcocer was born Dec. 19, 1941, son of Jose
Francisco and Barbara Lopez Alcocer. He was Catholic by faith and had owned and
operated the JF Market in Roanoke.

Alcocer and Richard Head.

(ATHENS, Ala.) Arthur Joseph Bailey, 78, of Athens, Ala., died Friday, Aug.
11, 2006, at Huntsville Hospital.

Woodland, with Allen Daniel officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Born in Randolph County on Aug. 3, 1928, Mr. Bailey was the son of Arthur B.
Bailey and Ida B. Kirby Bailey. He had served as a school administrator and
coach in various schools and was principal of Cragford Junior High School, Mr.
Bailey was a veteran of the Korean War and retired lieutenant colonel of the
army. He was a member of Northside Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Burma Bailey of Athens; daughter, Sherry
Honicker of Hampton Cove and Susan Bailey and Joan Berzett of Athens; seven
grandchildren; a sister, Mary Strain of Woodland; and several nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Eulous
Bailey, Carl Bailey and Ray V. Bailey; and one sister, Shirley Bailey.
Pallbearers were Ed Honicker, Eric Higginbotham, Edward Honicker, Butch
Berzett, Ryan Berzett and Cole Berzett.

(WOODLAND) Services for Jesse E. Shelton, 81, of Woodland will be Thursday,
Aug. 17, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek United Methodist Church, with the Revs.
Cloyse Johnson, Gary Henderson and Jerry Wiggins officiating. Mr. Shelton will
lie in state at the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow in
the church cemetery.

Center, Anniston.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Joyce Parker Shelton of Woodland; two
daughters, Brenda Prince of Woodland and Tammy Tepool of Huntsville; one son,
Wendell Shelton of Boaz; one sister, Eloise Cooper of Woodland; two brothers,
Autrey Shelton of Birmingham and Jack Shelton of Woodland; seven grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Prince, Dusty Shelton, Trent Tepool, Brian
Raughton, Michael Hollis, Tim Shelton, Michael Shelton and Jared Prince.
Mr. Shelton was born Aug. 7, 1925, son of Robert Lester and Etta Edwards
Shelton. He was a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church, had been
employed with Breman Bowdon Investment Company, was a farmer and served in the
United States Navy during World War II.

(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mary Edith Bryan, 89, of LaGrange, Ga., died Thursday, Aug.
10, 2006, at the Florence Hand Home.
Mrs. Bryan was born June 1, 1917, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the
late Lant and Ella Costley Hester. She was a charter member of Grace Baptist
Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Lucille O'Neal; two sons, Jerry Bryan and
William Bryan; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, all of LaGrange.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Bryan; brothers, Vollie
Hester, Lantern Hester and Durell Hester; and sisters, Ruby Brown and Nora
Norred.

William Eldridge Willoughby
(WADLEY) Services for William Eldridge Willoughby, 82, of Wadley were
Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Jeff
Freeman will officiate. Burial followed in the Zion Hill Baptist Church
Cemetery.
Mr. Willoughby died Tuesday, Aug. 8, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
He was born in Daviston on May 4, 1924, to William Walter Willoughby and
Ovada Menerva Whaley Willoughby. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church,
where he served as a deacon and treasurer of the church cemetery fund. He was a
World War II Army Air Force veteran, retired from Russell Corporation after
more than 30 years as a loom technician and was employed as a custodian at
Horseshoe Bend School since its opening. He enjoyed gardening, was an Alabama
football fan, loved the outdoors, and was a man of extreme faith.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pauline S. Willoughby of Wadley;
daughters Gaye Cotney of Tuscaloosa, Joy Black of Daviston and Merry Ledbetter
of Atlanta; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Boyd
Willoughby and Clifford Willoughby of Daviston; sisters, Sadie Sherum of
Daviston and Katherine Hester of Wadley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jack Willoughby; and a
sister, Edna Jones.

been employed with Higgins Manufacturing Company for several years, but retired
from Oxford Fashion after 16 years. She was also a quilter and member of Zion
Church of God.
She is survived by one daughter, Karen Pogue of Lineville; two sons, Terry
Sheppard of Lineville and Don Sheppard of Wedowee; nine grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; and special care-givers, Maxine Willoughby and Luella
Craig.She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Leon Sheppard.

Sidney Cofield
(MODESTO, Calif.) Sidney Cofield, 57, of Modesto, Calif:, died Saturday,
July 15, 2006, at Doctors Medical Center following an automobile accident.
Mr. Cofield was a native of Roanoke, born Feb. 9, 1949, to the late James
and Louise Cofield. He had lived in Modesto since 1991. Mr. Cofield worked at
General Motors in Milwaukee, Wis., for 15 years. He served in the army from
1969-71. He was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio
He is survived by his brothers, Joe Cofield of Solon, Ohio, Willie Cofield
of Cleveland, John Cofield of Norfolk, Va., and Jesse Cofield, Billy Lee
Cofield and Jimmy Cofield, all of Dayton; and sisters, Lela Graham, Thelma
Thornton and Jean Sheppard, all of Dayton, and Martha Field of San Antonio. He
was preceded in death by two sisters.
A memorial service was Saturday, Aug. 5, at 1 p.m. at Greater Allen A.M.E.
Church in Dayton.

She was a member of Inman United Methodist Church. She is survived by her

(HEFLIN) Services for Wivvis "W.C." Gosdin, 80, of Heflin will be Thursday,

Mr. Gosdin died Monday, Aug. 21, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Kittle Gosdin of Heflin; four daughters,

(RANBURNE) Mrs. Vastie "Ty" Haynes Gibbs of Ranburne died Monday, Aug. 21,
2006, at her residence. She was 82.
Mrs. Gibbs was born on Aug. 24, 1924, in Cleburne County to the late Moses
and Elsie Hanson Haynes. She was a homemaker and member of Ranburne Baptist
Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Survivors include her husband, Clyde Gibbs of Ranburne; sons, Michael Gibbs
of Ranburne and Alan Gibbs of Graham; five granddaughters and two grandsons;
and a sister, Verna Crabbe of Orlando, Fla. In addition to her parents, Mrs.
Gibbs was preceded in death by her brothers, Herbert and George Haynes.
Services for Mrs. Gibbs will be at Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. CDT at
Ranburne First Baptist Church. The Rev. Jerry Wolf, the Rev. James Benefield
and the Rev. Shane Cornutt will officiate.

Mildred Marie Foster Williams
(GLENN, Ga.) Mildred Marie Foster Williams, wife of the late Henry N.
Williams Jr. of Glenn, Ga., died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at West Georgia Medical
Center after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Williams was born in Randolph County to Roland Edgar and Mattie Belle
Pittman Foster. She was an active member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church,
where she served faithfully for 68 years in various leadership positions, was a
founding member of the church Cemetery Committee, and a member of the United
Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the
Nicholas Wallingford Chapter of the Colonial Dames, XVII Century, where her
interest in genalogy was shared with many others.
Mrs. Williams served in numerous organizations as a community volunteer for
close to 70 years with organizations including The American Cancer Society,
March of Dimes, and The American Heart Association. She was active in the
Ladies Auxiliary of the Georgia Cattlemen's Association and was a past
president of the Cow Belles. She served on numerous boards for Heard County,
both governmental and the community at large.
Mrs. Williams was a gracious hostess and enjoyed cooking for family and
friends. She was a talented artist and an avid gardener who loved sharing her
passions with others.
Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn Glover of Franklin, Ga., Janice Sims
of LaGrange, Ga., and Gayle Golden of Glenn, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Joe B. Williams Jr.
and Henry Newton Williams III; and a grandson, Michael Nelson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Mount Zion United
Methodist Church, Glenn, Ga., with Dr. Frederick V. Mills officiating. Mrs.
Williams will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Lane died Saturday, Aug. 19, at Fort Sanders Park West Hospital in
Knoxville. She lived with her daughter, Mary Gena Lane Sheppard in Knoxville at
the time of her death.

Sheppard of Knoxville, Jane and Dick Boyette of Eufaula, and William and Pam
Lane of Roanoke; five grandchildren; two sisters, Sara Handley Crook and Jane

one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Carolyn Lane; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Born Oct. 17, 1914, in Roanoke, Mrs. Lane was the daughter of the late Ben
Moore Handley Sr. and Mary Will Chewning Handley. She was the wife of the late
Dr. William Ferrell Lane Sr. She graduated from Handley High School and Alabama
Polytechnic Institute (Auburn). A devoted mother and homemaker, she was a
lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Roanoke, where she was a
dedicated volunteer in the church library and taught Sunday school for many
years. She taught in the Roanoke public school system.
Mrs. Lane was preceded in death by one sister, Rosa Handley Hicks; two
brothers, Ben Moore Handley Jr. and Guy Hartwell Handley; and two
grandchildren, John Perry Boyette and Jeffrey Walter Sheppard.

(HEFLIN) Michael Leonard McVey, 30, of Heflin, formerly of Bremen, Ga., died
Monday, Aug. 14, 2006.
He was born Dec. 9, 1975, in Cobb, County, Ga. He was the son of the late
Elby Leonard McVey and Irene LaVon Marek McVey. Mr. McVey was of the Christian
faith. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry.
Mr. McVey enjoyed fishing, swimming and the outdoors.

both of Carrollton, Ga.; his mother, Irene LaVon Marek McVey; his sister,

A Randolph County native, Mr. Martin was born July 5, 1961, son of Sharon
William and Evelyn Bonnie Ferrell Martin. He was a construction worker.

Victoria Margaret Wells Hicks
(WOODLAND) Services for Victoria Margaret Wells Hicks, 11, of Woodland will
be Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Rocky Branch Baptist Church, with Bro.
Clayton Scott officiating. Miss Hicks will lie in state at the church one hour
before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Miss Hicks died Monday, Aug. 28, at her home.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at
Benefield Funeral Home.
Miss Hicks is survived by her mother and stepfather, Marian and Eddie
Grizzard of Woodland; her father, David Hicks of Lathonia, Ga.; her paternal
grandmother, Leola Boozer of Lathonia; her stepgrandmother, Dessie Grizzard of
Muscadine; two sisters, Whitney Hicks and Haley Grizzard of Woodland; and two
brothers, Michael Grizzard of Muscadine and Chris Grizzard of Anniston.
Miss Hicks was born July 29, 1955. She was a member of Rocky Branch Baptist
Church and a member of the Woodland Band. She was preceded in death by her
grand-mother, Lucette B. Wells; one aunt, Brenda Ghee; and one uncle, Loy Hicks.

Thomas Melvin Houston
(ATLANTA) Thomas Melvin Houston, 89, of Atlanta died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006,
at his home.
Services will be Thursday, Aug. 31, at noon at Mount Bethel United Methodist
Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. Shannon Allison and the Rev. Robert L. Heflin
officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Stanley Warren Houston and Derrick Ricardo
Houston of Atlanta; a daughter, Gerald Houston Frazier of Atlanta; a grandson
and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Faye
Houston.
Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service from 10 a.m. until
6 p.m. on Wednesday.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.

Barbara Louise Jones
(LINEVILLE) Services for Barbara Louise Jones, 52, of Lincoln will be at
Chapel Hill Funeral Home Chapel, Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at 11 a.m. with the
Rev. Bobby Jones and the Rev. Tim Harper officiating. Interment will be at
Little John Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones died Monday, Aug. 28, at Lineville.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her husband, Ken Jones of Lineville; her
daughters, Christy M. Roberts of Piedmont, Gail Fenton of New Haven, Ky., and
Sharon Neuling of Louisville, Ky.; sons, Jackie Jones of Oxford, Donald Jones
of Wadley and Mark Jones of Oxford; parents, retired Lt. Col. Luke H. and Rose
N. West of Jacksonville; sisters, Linda West of Birmingham, Susan Glover of
Piedmont and Nancy Hamill of Moody; brothers, Steve West of Montgomery and
David West of Lineville; and 13 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Alex Glover, Brent Mitchell, Timothy Jones, Dave
Shiffner, Curtis Haynes and Henry Hamill.
Mrs. Jones was a native of Calhoun County and resident of Clay County for 13
years. She was employed at Anniston Army Depot with 30 years of government
service. She was a member of Women of the Moose.

Velma Irene Prescott Brown
(HOGANSVILLE, Ga.) Velma Irene Prescott Brown, 81, of Hogansville, Ga., died
Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at her home.
Mrs. Brown was born Dec. 7, 1924, in Roanoke, daughter of the late George
Washington Prescott and Carrie Lovvorn Prescott. She had been an area resident
since 1950 and was retired from International Play-Tex. Mrs. Brown was a
charter member of Broad Street Church of Christ and was an active member of
Northside Church of Christ. She was a member of the LaGrange Senior Center and
was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Ellis Brown Sr.
Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia Brown of LaGrange, Ga.; son, Grover
E. Brown Jr. of LaGrange; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother,
Curtis Prescott of Roanoke; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews,
cousins and special friends.
Graveside funeral services were held 11 a.m. E.D.T. Aug. 28, at Mt. Carmel
Church of Christ Cemetery in Woodland with pastor Frank Lyons and Bill Davis
officiating.

(WEDOWEE) Alzadia West, 79, of 111 King David Turner Rd., Wedowee, died
Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at Union Chapel United
Methodist Church, Wedowee, with the Revs. William Crawford, Craig McClure and
Michael Robertson and evangelist Barbara Dorsey officiating. Burial will be in
the church cemetery.
Ms. West is survived by two daughters, Henrietta West of Inglewood, Calif.,
and Peggy Marable of Wedowee; a sister, Della Phillips of Atlanta; two
granddaughters; two grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by a daughter, Barbara Knight; two sisters, Eula Mae Billingsley and
Wildred West; and a granddaughter, Tasha Knight.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before services.

(VALLEY) The Rev. James J. Harper, 66, of Valley died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006,
at his residence.
Services were Sunday, Aug. 27, at 5 p.m. at Shawmut United Methodist Church
with the Rev. Perry Duffey officiating. Burial followed at Resthaven Memorial
Gardens.
Mr. Harper is survived by his wife, Nina Sanders Harper; a daughter, Tina H.
Lankford; four sons, Jeffery J. Harper, Andrew G. Harper, Karl A. Harper and
Glenn P. Harper; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Albert Harper; one sister,
Patricia Wallace; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born Oct. 31, 1939, in Rock Mills, the Rev. Harper was the son of the late
Minnie D. Henderson Harper and Andrew J. Harper. He was a retired employee of
West Point Pepperell with 28 years of service and was a shift supervisor in
Lanett Mill. The Rev. Harper was a graduate of Valley High School, Southern
Union and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He had retired
from the United Methodist Church ministry and last served in June 2006 at
Shawmut United Methodist Church.
The family respectfully declines the honor of flowers and asks that
memorials be made to Shawmut United Methodist Church in his memory.

Daisy Mae McCarter
(ROANOKE) Services for Daisy Mae McCarter, 79, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Aug.
29, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Bonner
officiating. Burial followed at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery,
Broughton.
Mrs. McCarter died Saturday, Aug. 26, at Clay County Hospital.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Yolanda G. McCarter of Temecula,
Calif.; one grandchild; one sister, Doris Woodall of LaGrange, Ga.; and one
brother, Jim Luther McCarter of Burbank, Calif.

Harvel and Harold Maynard.
Mrs. McCarter was born Aug. 29, 1926, daughter of Jessie and Lula Mae Yates
McCarter. She was of the Baptist faith and had been a nurse at Riverside
General Hospital, Riverside, Calif. Mrs. McCarter was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, William A. McCarter; and one son, Tommy McCarter.

Curtis Herschel Dalrymple
(ELKHART, Ind.) Services for Curtis Herschel Dalrymple, 77, of Elkhart,
Ind., formerly of Woodland, were Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Prospect
Congregational Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ridley Parmer officiating.
Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Dalrymple died Friday, Aug. 25, at his home.
Mr. Dalrymple is survived by his ex-wife, Mary Craft of Woodland; one son,
Bobby Dalrymple of Elkhart; two grandchildren; one sister, Jerlean Rosenberg of
Bowdon, Ga.; and two brothers, Lem Dalrymple and Elton Dalrymple of Woodland.
Mr. Dalrymple was born May 14, 1929, son of John and Beulah Hendley
Dalrymple.He had been employed by the Chrysler Corporation, Sterling Heights
Assembly Plant, as line supervisor for shipping and receiving. Mr. Dalrymple
was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Amos Dalrymple.

(ROANOKE) Jesse J. “Smokie” Trammell, 76, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, Aug. 22,
2006, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
Services were Aug. 26 at Mount Pleasant United Methodist, Five Points, with
the Revs. Tommie Finley and Calvin Trammell officiating. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Evon Garrett of Chicago and Maevon
Satcher and Fredricka L. Trammell-Walker of Anniston; a son, Willie James
Trammell of Anniston; two brothers, Ralph Trammell Jr. of Roanoke and Clifford
Trammell of Five Points; four sisters, Jessie Trammell and Mary Garrett of
Roanoke and Ucala Fuller and Margaret Tinker of Fort Wayne, Ind.; five
stepdaughters, Mary Mosley, Betty Staples, Corene McCurty and Frances Tucker of
Roanoke and Kathleen Jones of Wadley; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren;
and one great-great-grandchild.He was preceded in death by his wife,

(WOODLAND) Services for Martha Burson Wilson, 77, of Woodland were Saturday,
Aug. 26, 2006, at Prospect Congregational Methodist Church, with the Revs.

in Gray Hill Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilson died Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Roanoke Healthcare.
Mrs. Wilson is survived by her husband, Murphy Wilson of Woodland; one
daughter, Rhonda Herren of Woodland; four granddaughters; six great-
grandchildren; one sister, Bertie Waldrep of Brewton; and one brother, Manley
Burson of Acworth, Ga.
Pallbearers were Joe McQuire, Wallace Burson, Garner Maddox, Clyde Cook,
Alvin George and Joe Noles.
Mrs. Wilson was born Sept. 3, 1928, daughter of Bulan Son and Ollie Carr
Burson. She was a member of Prospect Congregational Methodist Church and had
worked at Dale Manufacturing Company as a seamstress. Mrs. Wilson is preceded
in death by her parents; one daughter, Wanda Jane Wilson; and one brother, Lee
Burson.

Dwayne Houston
(OWINGS MILLS, Md.) Sgt. 1st Class Dwayne Houston of Owings Mills, Md., died
Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Sgt. 1st Class Houston, born Aug. 30, 1963, in Troup County, Ga., was the
son and eighth child of Mrs. Mary Alice Houston of LaGrange, Ga., and the late
Mr. Seyphous Houston. He was a 1981 graduate of Troup High School and
immediately joined the army after graduation. According to statements by his
commanding officer, "Sgt. 1st Class Houston exemplified the army values during
his career and set a sterling example for all leaders to follow prior to his
untimely death on 21 August 2006. His actions have had a lasting, positive
effect on unit training and soldier readiness throughout the army, army reserve
and national guard."
In addition to his loving and devoted mother, he leaves to cherish his
memories, a daughter, Brittany Houston of Fairfax, Va.; stepdaughter, Aja
Shamburger and her daughter; sisters, Josephine Tucker, Drusilla Maddox and
Marilyn Wilson of LaGrange, Gertrude Herring of San Antonio, Texas, and
Jacqueline Houston of Americus, Ga.; brothers, Donald Houston of LaGrange and
retired Staff Sgt. Rodney Johnson of Kuwait; his fiance, Terri Robinson of
Owings Mills; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was
preceded in death by brothers, Ronnie Houston and Lamar Houston.
Services were Monday, Aug. 28, at New Community Church at 1200 S. Davis Rd.
with the Rev. Michael Stenson officiating. Burial, with full military honors,
was in the Mount Olive United Methodist Church Cemetery in Wadley.

(ROANOKE) Services for George Frank Cole, 87, of Roanoke will be Thursday,
Aug. 31, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Center Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jody

Cedarwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m.
on Wednesday. Mr. Cole will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to
services.
Mr. Cole died Tuesday, Aug. 29, in Roanoke.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Cole of Roanoke and Elizabeth
Winburn of Niceville, Fla.; a son, Richard Cole of Gainesville, Ga.; a sister,
Odel Bennett of Roanoke; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be David Rice, Israel Henry, Mark Holderfield, Scott Winburn,
Anthony Winburn and Harold Elliott.
A lifelong Roanoke resident, Mr. Cole was born March 31, 1919, son of Alonzo
Frank and Roxie Etta Gibson Cole. He was a World War II Navy veteran and served
in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of Center Chapel Baptist Church and had
retired from Handley Mills. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive Cole,
and a son, Kenneth Cole.

(ROANOKE) Services for Virginia Meacham Landers, 88, of Roanoke will be

Mrs. Landers died Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
Survivors include a daughter, Harriett L. Taylor of Oxford; two sons, John
Landers and Bill Landers of Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Odessa Meacham of
Talladega and Mary Lee Landers of Roanoke; seven grandchildren and seven great-
grandchildren.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Landers was born Nov. 28, 1917,
daughter of Rev. William Thomas and Lela Maude Johnson Meacham. She was a
homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke. She was preceded in
death by her parents; two sisters, Ethel Bailey and Edith Edmondson; and four
brothers, Howard, Olin, Curtis and Earnest Meacham.

(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Katie Bell Andrews, 87, of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday,
Aug. 23, 2006, at her home.
Services were Saturday, Aug. 26, at LaGrange Pentecostal Holiness Church
with the Revs. Leonard Hodge and Joe Strickland officiating.Burial followed
at Highway Congregational Methodist Church Cemetery in Randolph County.
Mrs. Andrews is survived by two daughters, Delores Walston of LaGrange and
Jo Hudgins of McDonough, Ga.; two sons, Kenneth Andrews of Rockford and Charlie
Andrews of Stockbridge, Ga.; a sister, Alma Folds of LaGrange; 22
grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Born Dec. 16, 1918, in Randolph County, Mrs. Andrews was the daughter of the
late Robert Alonza Spears and the late Annie MacDonald Spears. She lived in
Troup County, Ga., most of her life. Mrs. Andrews was a member of LaGrange
Pentecostal Holiness Church and was the wife of the late Joseph David Andrews.
