I am seeking more information about an Andrew Foster of Hunterdon County, New Jersey in the early 1700s. If anyone has more information about this man and his family, please contact me directly at duaneaboggs@hotmail.com.

Here are some details.

A History of the Old Presbyterian Congregation of “The People of Maidenhead and Hopewell,” more especially of the First Presbyterian Church at Hopewell, of Pennington, New Jersey, delivered at the Pastor’s request on Sabbath morning, July 2d, 1876, by the Rev. George Hale, D.D., lately pastor of the church.

Page 15:       1722 tax list, “Andru” Foster had 100 acres, with 1 head of cattle/horses and 0 sheep

From this I infer that Andrew was born before 1700.

When the will of John Severns of Trenton,
Hunterdon County, New Jersey (dated 29 March 1732) was probated, a list of debtors who owed the estate was filed in the court records. On the list (with dozens of others) was Andrew "Forster".

Andrew died, possibly in late 1732, intestate, I believe. I think the following concerns him.

Name: Andrew FOSTER
Death: 6 Dec 1732 in , Hunterdon, Province of New Jersey, Great Britain

I believe this Andrew Foster had a daughter Mary, born between 1705 and 1710, who married Thomas Burrows (or Burrowes or Burroughs), the son of Thomas Burrows, and she named a son Foster Burrows. If Mary was Andrew's daughter, then I infer that Andrew was born before 1690. He could have been of German, Scottish or English ancestry and might have come to the colony of New Jersey directly from Europe or he might have been one of the migrants from the Long Island, New York area. Or, he might have come from a New England family of Fosters.

I believe this Andrew Foster also had a son Andrew, to whom the following items probably apply.

From the book, "A History of the Old Presbyterian Congregation" already cited above: Page 16:

1745, Dec. 13. Field, John, of Hopewell, Hunterdon Co., within the Corporation of Trenton, yeoman; will of. Being very sick. Wife, Sarah. Children Daniel, Nathaniel, Isaac, Elizabeth, Providence, and Seth. Son, Seth, residuary legatee and executor. Seth to take care of testators son John. Witnesses Andrew Foster, Roger Woolverton and Andrew Smith. Proved August 11, 1746. Lib. 5, p. 259.
1746, June 7. Inventory (180.2.7) includes 3 guns and 3 swords. Made by Andrew Smith and Roger Woolverton.

So this Andrew Foster, to be a witness, was likely over 21, so born in/before 1724.

Andrew Foster of Hopewell was on a list of those who had a letter waiting at the post office as of August 10, 1758.

Between 1758 and 1767, this Andrew might have moved from Hopewell to the area of Kingwood or Bethlehem, still in Hunterdon County, and the following records might refer to him.

#212; Joseph LITTLE of Bethleham*, & Andrew FOSTER of Kingwood in the County of Hunterdon... [bound to]... William FRANKLIN, Gov'r... 500 pounds... 16 Sept 1767. ... Joseph LITTLE... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Margaret LITTLE... [w] Jasp'r SMITH [on the back: 1767, Hunterdon County]

#241; William LITTLE and Andrew FOSTER, both of the Township of Bethlem* & County of Hunterdon... [bound to]... William FRANKLIN, Esq'r... 500 pounds... 5 July 1770. ... William LITTLE... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Agnes ARMSTRONG of the same township... [w] William FRAZER

An Andrew Foster left a will dated December 12, 1780, Bethlehem, Hunterdon, administratrix was wife Mary and her bondsman was Joseph Little. Witness was Martha Biggar. Inventory was December 4, 1780 by Cornelius Tunison and Hugh Scott.
