I have a letter written in 1948 by my great Uncle Lee Perkijns about his grandfather, John Leroy Perkins (1826-1926).The letter mentions that John Leroy was married 4 or 5 times.
Here is an excerpt from John Leroy Perkins' obituary; only 4 wives are mentioned:
"In 1844 he was married to (1)Miss Nancy Hall. This union was broken six weeks later by the death of the wife.
Two years later, in 1846, the deceased enlisted in the regular army and served in the Mexican war.He received an honorable discharge after serving two years and four months.
Soon after returning from the Mexican war, Mr. Perkins was married to (2)Elizabeth Perryman. This was in 1849, and she passed away in 1853.To this union two children were born, a son – Charles Willis, and a daughter – Louisa, both now deceased.
In the year 1859 he was married again, his bride being (3)Mary Ann Hall.
In 1862 he enlisted in the 7th Illinois Cavalry and served three years in the Civil war; returning home at the close of the war.
Two years later he and his family move to Princeton, Mo., where they lived for twenty one years, and there his wife passed away.He then returned to Shelby county and made his home with his son.
On Sept. 17, 1891 he was married to (4) Alvesta Beiber and then moved to a farm three miles north of Cowden, where they lived until the death of the wife, which occurred Oct. 15, 1918.
During the last six years of his life, he lived with H.O. and Mrs. Kesler of Herrick, the latter of whom is a grand daughter. In this home he was tenderly cared for and there he died Jan. 30, 1926.He passed to the great land of his hope and his dreams at 3 o’clock a.m. at the age of 99 years, 8 months, 4 days."
As I mentioned, the Illinois marriage records listed a marriage on 7 September 1854 between a Mary Jane Foster and John L. Perkins occurring in Shelby County.I have not found any US census records that list Mary Jane Foster. On the other hand John Leroy Perkins was a widower with two young children from sometime in 1853 after the birth of a daughter 22 July 1853 and it was 8 June 1859 when he married Mary Ann Jones Hall. This is a five or six year period (1853-1859) that I cannot accountfor who cared for his two children, if he was married and what happened to this wife.
I do not think the Marion area was ever his residence.
