It looks like Christopher Foster of Lynn, CT was one of the originalfounders of Hempstead, LI in 1644, who later moved to Southampton, LI.
There are no records of Hempstead landholders prior to 1647. Christopher Foster and Thomas Foster are listedfreeholders of Hempstead on the 1647 list.
Those who disagreed with the religious and political dictates of the Massachusetts Bay Colonystarted settlements inCT.The followers of Rev. Richard Denton (grandson of Sir Richard Denton) and Rev. Robert Fordhamstarted the 1st English settlements on Long Island in the 1640s.
In 1643, a group of settlers of CT sent Rev. Robert Fordham and John Carman to LI to purchase the land from the indians. At the time, this area of LI was under Dutch jurisdiction.
Those who founded the settlement at Hempstead waited until the Dutch governor granted them a patent to establish an English settlement in 1644.Prior that,a few settlers from Lynn, CT had purchased land on LIfrom the indians in the Dutch controlledregion and had attempted to start a settlement without getting approval of the Dutch governor. They were arrested and released shorly after being arrested. However, those arrested were banned from settling in the Dutch controlled area of Long Island. The eastern section of LI was under English control. Southampton, LI was founded shortly after the Lynn settlers were arrested.
