I am the grandson of Ben Fortune, born in Harrison NJ on Aug 27, 1886. I am looking for information his father William, and his brothers John H., William, and a half brother (same father) David.
Willam was born in Scotland in Aug. 1852. I do not know where in Scotland but I was told the family had something to do with ship building. He is listed on the US 1880, 1910, and 1920 census as a ships carpenter. (I suspect at least the last 1 was mostly a career in memory rather than present fact.) I believe he emigrated to the US in ~1870 but have not been able to determine where, how, or exactly when. In 1980 William was married to Alice (Hensor?) and had 3 sons Benjamine (born Aug 1986), John H. (born Dec. 1879) and William (born July 1980). Alice�s brother Arthur also lived with them. By 1910, William was married to Hanna Lutier (nee Conklin). He had a 4th son David by this marriage.
Asside from being born in July 1880, I know absolutely nothing else about the son William.
I also know nothing else about David Fortune (born about 1906).
I know a little about John H. He seems to have been a fireman in Jersey City, NJ in 1910. He lived on the south-west side of Haworth NJ (Bergen County) during at least the late 1940s through ~1953. During this period I was told he had a daughter who lived with him but I never met her. I do not know if this was a fact or simply something told to children.
I just saw this forum and am surprised at how many Fortunes there seem to be. I know we all have other jobs but would appreciate any information that can be had on this portion of my family. I can be reached here or at �cpaulson@comcast.net�.
