New Fortune DNA Project
The new Fortune DNA Surname Group Project at www.familytreedna.com is now up and running.
If you have come to a brick wall with your paper trail on your Fortune ancestor and don't know what to do next, if you have exhausted all known print resources, or if you have compared paper trails with another Fortune descendant and would like to confirm the likelihood of a close relationship between your ancestors, DNA technology may be the only way to make any further progress.
The test is a simple cheek swab.It is a Y-DNA test of the direct, paternal line to determine the likelihood in percentages that two participants share a common ancestor, and how far back in time the ancestor may have lived. For that reason, only male Fortunes or males whose father is/was a Fortune by birth are eligible for the proeject.Female Fortune descendants play an important role, too, however. If you are a female Fortune descendant and know a male relative who qualifies, please contact me for more information.
Personally, I am looking for DNA candidates among the male Fortune descendants of the children of John and Anne Fortune, both born about 1725 in Ireland, who sailed from Newry, Ireland in the Spring of 1767 aboard the Britannia bound for Charleston, South Carolina. John and Anne and their seven children arrived in Charleston on August 23, 1767. They received bounty lands in the Kershaw District near what is now Winnsboro, South Carolina. John and Anne Fortune's children were: Mary b. 1746, William b. 1748, John b. 1751, Jane b. 1754, Mark b. 1756, Richard b. 1758 and Elizbeth b. 1759.
John, Jr. died before 1776, probably without issue.
Mark died about 1782, probably without issue.
Mary Fortune is my direct ancestor. She married Robert McCreary, Sr. and they moved to Barnwell District, SC about 1771. They had several children. She died about 1818.
William Fortune married Mary LNU and had six children, including three sons: Joseph, Rawdon, Thomas and William. William, Sr. left America for Canada before 1833.
Richard Fortune married Mary White? and moved to Barnwell District where he died about 1820. He and Mary had 11 children, including 8 sons: John, Adam, James, Jesse, Thomas, Richard, William, and Joseph. Most of the sons left Barnwell District for Florida about 1825.
Jane Fortune married Walter Robinson and moved to Barnwell District then to Jefferson Co., GA before 1830.
Elizabeth Fortune married a McWatty, probably John or James, the son of Eleanor McWatty, Sr. who received land on Granny's Quarter Creek, in what is now Richland Co., SC in 1773. Elizabeth Fortune McWatty died before 1783. She had two children, Nancy and Thomas.
I encourage other Fortunes to establish a database within the project for your line. All Fortunes, regardless of nationality or ethnicity, are welcome to join the project.I am particularly interested in finding DNA candidates born and currently living in Ireland, Scotland and England willing to be tested.
If you have questions or would like to know more about the project or DNA testing in general, please contact me.
Thank you,
