Hi,

Fortuna is a common italian word for "luck" or "fortune", it can be fickle, good, or bad...it is representative of fate. Fortuna was a minor Roman goddess of fate, it is used like Nike, as a prefix kind of word. There is a temple in Rome to Fortuna Virilis. It also means the same thing in Spanish, and is a common name in places where the Spanish populated, like South America and the Phillipines. It is also a common name in Northeastern Europe, and could possible have something to do with The goths or Visigoths....I have also been told that it means "wind from the sea" in Greek, which would probably refernce a good fortune wind bringing sailors home.....I have seen Fortunatus, as a Greek Surname, and some of my ancestors were greek, but Southern Italy was invaded and occupied by everyone from Huns to Spaniards to Greeks to Eurasians over the ages, so its more like the US as far as an immigrant melting pot!
