I have been attempting to identify a Benjamin Fortner who appears in my 3xs great grandfather's (Peter Hale)household in the 1850 census records for Marion County, Florida. Benjamin Fortner was 50 years old in this census, occupation listed as a saddler and had served in the 2nd Seminole Wars in Florida in the same Cavalry Unit as Peter Hale (2nd U.S. Dragoons).Peter Hale was a native of Maine and Fortner does not give his birthplace in the census records.Peter Hale's wife was Mary Willis, born somewhere in Georgia.By 1860 census records Benjamin Fortner is no longer listed, but Mary and Peter Hale have a new baby boy, named Benjamin Albert Hale. I am certain there is more than just a casual relationship between these families but have been unable to track Fortner's origins down.(or Peter Hale's for that matter!!) Could this be a connection to your Fortners?
