I don't have a Joseph Fortin born around 1872 but I do have a Ovide J. Frotin born in Aug 1872 in Portland, ME. Perhaps this is your g-grandfather or a cousin of his.
Ovide J. Fortin is the son of John (or French version Jean) Fortin, born in Quebec in August 1848, died after 1900, and Caroline Prefontaine, b. Dec 19, 1851 in Quebec and died in Portland, ME on July 16, 1930.
On May 2, 1898 he married Alexina Guimond in the parish of St-Hyacinth in Westbrooke, ME. Alexina was born in /Quebec in Sept 1868, the daughter of Frederic Guimond and R/gina Bernier.
Census data indicates that Ovide J. & Alexina lived in Westbrooke, ME until at least 1930 at which time Ovide's mother, a widow, still resided with them. Census data from 1910 indicates that Alexina had had 5 children, 3 of which where still living at the time of the census, one of which would have passed before the 1900 census.
The children I have for them are:
1. Jean (John) Rene Fortin, b. April 1899 in Westbrooke or Portland, ME
2. Leo A. Fortin, b. 1903 or 1904 in Westbrook or Portland, ME
3. Robert G. Fortin, b. 1906 or 1907 in Westbrooke or Portland, ME.

I know that Caroline's parents and younger siblings moved on the Greenfield, MA and later to Manitoba, Canada by 1880. She remained with her husband and family in Westbrook, ME (suburb of Portland, ME) after 1870 and I have census info tracking them until 1930.
Ovide J. Fortin & Caroline Prefontaine had 2 children that I know of:
1. Ovide J. Fortin
2. Flora Fortin, b. around 1875, possibly also in Westbrooke or Portland, ME. She died in 1927.
