I am looking for any information on the family of my Addie V. FORTE - BOOTH. According to her census information, she was born in 1843 or 1844 in Mississippi. It is only recently that I was helped to find her maiden name, found on her daughter (Sarah Elizabeth BOOTH - CLEVELAND's) death certificate.
Addie lived most of her married life with William Green BOOTH in Neshoba County, MS. One year I found her in Yazoo County, MS. As a widow, she moved to Bosque County, Texas and there married Allen DORSEY about 1906.
I have had very little luck in finding her birth family. My only possible one so far is an Adeline FORTE aged either 4 or 6 in 1850, living with a Mary FORTE, age 27 (b. SC), presumably her mother. They both are listed at the same address (but with a different family number) as James (65) and Nancy (56)Welch and their son James (22) in Winston Co., MS.
Another recent find is that my Addie V. BOOTH (at age about 16!) was listed as the owner of 5-6 slaves in 1860, Neshoba County. I found it unusual that she was listed as the owner rather than her husband William Green Booth. It makes me wonder if she had inheirited them. If so, I suppose there must have been a will or at least estate papers filed... but then, being Mississippi, I would bet on the courthouse having burned ;o)
I have just not found much of a trail for any Forte families in Mississippi at this time. I would like to hear from anyone else that knows of this surname in Mississippi.
Another possible clue, at least for young Adeline (not knowing if she is one-and-the-same as my Addie, yet)
--I found an " L H FORTE " that married Mary POWELL, 16 Dec 1835 in Leake County, MS. These three counties are very close to one another. If you had a box with four quadrants, Neshoba Co. is the lower right quadrant, Winston is upper right and Leake Co., is the lower left.
The problem is that if Adeline's mother Mary was the former Miss POWELL, she would have to be older than 27 in 1850 (I should think at least 30-32) and even if her age was given incorrectly, I would expect her to have more than one child with her. While it is certainly still possible they are the same person, it isn't a neat and tidy package.
So does anyone have information on "L H and Mary (Powell) FORTE that can exclude them as parents of Adeline / Addie? (I did NOT, by the way, find a 14 or 16 year old Adeline FORTE in 1860 that would prove she is a different person than my Addie V. FORTE - BOOTH. IF they are the same person, I would not expect to find her under that name since (at age 16) she was already married with a baby and another on the way in 1860.)
Addie V. FORTE - BOOTH named her children:
Alice V. (b 1859)
A. L. "Laura" BOOTH (b 1860) Her name may have been Addie Lorena like a younger paternal cousin.
Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" BOOTH (b 1863)
William Franklin BOOTH (b 1866) (my line)
Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" BOOTH (b. 1871, m. William Barto CLEVELAND)
Walter Green BOOTH (b 1876)
--'Alice' and 'Walter', in particular, may possibly be clues to Addie's family. I do not either name previously on the BOOTH side.
