David, The following was put together by my cousin who lives in Aberdeen and study's Family History at the college there. I am not sure if it would help you, but some of what you mentioned seems very familiar and coincidental to our family.

My grandfather was David John Forsyth who was born in Aberdeen in 1906. His fathers name was Alexander. As you read on, you will see there were many Alexander in this family. Most likely, just a very common name in Scotland.

Feel free to write back if something rings a bell. I could probably get you in touch with my cousin who has spent many years studying history of our family.

I live in the US, but she is there in Aberdeen Scotland.
