I saw this while I was searching a newspaper archive. Even if Forrester was innocent of this murder, he was still quite the incorrigible! The Port Jervis Evening Gazette available through: NewsArchive.com and Ancestry.com Also availble on microfilm at the: Port Jervis Free Library 138 Pike Street Port Jervis, NY 12771 March 11, 1871 (page 1, top of column 3) The Mystery of the NATHAN Murder About to be Unraveled - The Assasin Now Known Light at last breaks in upon the almost impenetrable mystery which, since the murder of Mr. Benjamin NATHAN at his residence in New York last summer, has enveloped that terrible crime, and there is a ___ prospect that the horrible affair will will [sic] be wholly cleared up by the arrest and conviction of the murderer. Superintendant KELSO, on behalf of the police authorities, has announced that the purpetrator of the infamous crime is known to the police, and has been so to them for some time past. The man is a thief and burglar, who for years past has been well known to the police of New York and other citizens of the United States. He is one of the most determined and desparate characters among the thieving fraternity. His real name is supposed to be William FORRESTER, but he has from time to time, when caught in the meshes of the law, assumed the aliases of Billy MARSHALL, Bill CAMPBELL, Frank CAMPBELL, Frank LIVINGSTONE, Frank HARDING, and Frank HOWARD. He has been traced from New York to Chicago, thence to St. Louis, from that place to Cincinnati, and even New Orleans, but the police have been foiled in every attempt to capture him and are now at bay. As a last resort, finding that secrecy has not assisted them in securing the murderer, Superintendent KELSO has determined to give the matter the utmost publicity, and see whether this will effect the desired consummation. With this object in view, Superintendent KELSO has prepared a circular giving an accurate description of FORRESTER, and offering $2,500 reward for his capture and delivery to this city [New York, NY]. The principle evidence against FORRESTER is, as asserted that the "dog" with which Mr. NATHAN was so brutally murdered, or one very similar to it, has been traced to his possession. FORRESTER, as stated before, is a desperado of the most dangerous stamp. Though not more than 36 or 38 years of age, he has spent nearly half his life in the prisons of the United States. He escaped from Joliet Ill., State Prison, where he had thirteen years more to serve. He has been confined in Sing Sing Prison [Ossining, NY], at Cherry Hill, Pennsylvania, and escaped from both. He has several indictments for burglary hanging over his head. About a year and a half ago he was arrested by one of Allen PINKERTON's detectives, but was rescued from the officer by The. ALLEN and a crowd of thieves from the St. Bernard House, corner of Prince and Mercer-sts. During his active career he has secured a remarkable immunity from arrest, but it is to be hoped that he will secured at last and brought to the bar of judgement to receive well deserved punishment for his misdeeds.
