Wow!
My knowledge of Dutch is the null set, although I have some acquaintance of the mechanics of the W. European languages and a good historical background.
Because of their long association with Francophones in the Lowlands (i.e., the Walloons), the Dutch used their own preposition "of" -- van -- interchangeably with the French "de": Van Helsing, De Groot being two examples. In German, at least, the "ver" prefix usually connotes (to me, at any rate) the prepositional "from" sense of "of," rather than the possessive indicated by van or de.So, you may be quite right that "coming from" rather than "being of" is the subtle distinction.
Although I have found one reference to a Forncrook born in Germany, there is no more specific place denoted, so it might easily be six meters across the frontier, and the family thoroughly Dutch. The "oo" is a dead giveaway for Dutch or Flemish to my mind, that combination not normally appearing in modern German words.
My limited research into the easy-to-find Forncrooks (I just spent 4 hrs on the 'Net, for example) points to Dutchness by association, if nothing else. The Forncrooks married into old Dutch-American families, lived near them, attended church, etc.At least one of the English families they married into has putative associations with old Hollander families in New Jersey.
I have prepared an outline, notional tree trying to connect the NYS Forncrooks with each other.Once it's done, I will forward to you by private e-mail; I think it's a bit bulky for the forum.
Just now, I have to get ready to go back East, so it may be a week or so before you see anything from me in your mailbox.
