William Gardner Forman 1804-1862 ENG/MI

I am looking for the following ancestor:

William Gardner Forman who was born in Hampshire, England, Jan. 17, 1804. Died at Smyrna, Michigan, Dec. 26, 1862.
              His wife
Abigail Crow was born near Toledo, Ohio, March 23, 1808. Died, Sept. 2, 1857, at Smyrna, Michigan.
Children: George Dallas Forman and a Mrs. Chas Lovrain.

A problem has presented itself as William Gardner Forman is said to be what many might call the “Black Sheep” of the family. This is the story as my grandmother told it.

William lived in England with his family. One day a fair of some sort was passing through the area. William had somehow gotten himself into trouble. His attendance at this fair, which he really wanted to go to, was forbidden; however, being a normal young man he felt that he could still attend without his family finding out. They all left for the fair leaving him at home with instructions to stay there. At what he felt was the appropriate moment he went to the fair.
Of course, as most stories like this go, he was caught!
Upon his families return his father decided that his good-for-nothing son needed to be taught a lesson. To accomplish this William was signed on to a ship. This ship sailed to the Americas, and once again, at the appropriate moment, William made his escape. He jumped overboard and swam to shore. He came to ground either in Nova Scotia or the upper coastline of the United States.
His family was said to have never heard from him again.

Any help in finding his family is appreciated.
