Hi Jeffrey,

do you have a Gideon amongst your Fordes? My husbands furthest back Forde ancestor that we know of was named Gideon fforde in our family records, born in 1619 in 'the West Country' and he is is believed by his descendants to have gone to the Bandon area of County Cork, in Ireland, as part of the plan to 'plant' or settle more Protestants in Catholic Ireland. In our family records he has "1651 settled in Carrigascully" (sic) written before his name, and then "Gideon fforde 1619 circa". (The townlands information database indicates that it's actually Carrigskullihy in County Cork, Civil Parish Fanlobbus, Poor Law Union Dunmanway and Barony East Carbery (W.D.), which is close to the town of Bandon). Carrigskullihy ... would appear to be located nearer to Dunmanway than Bandon and north of the Bandon River. The name derives from the Irish Carraig Scoilighte which means Splitrock and is sometimes called Splitrock by the locals."
I have now received land records from Ireland that the Forde family indeed did live there until 1915. My husband's branch moved to the Cloyne area in the 1840s.

We have also been told that a Gideon Forde, aged 24, emigrated on the 11th May 1644 (which would be the right age for Gideon in that year, since his date of birth in our records is 1619) to Massachusetts, from Wiltshire. He is described as a yeoman and "of Semley" (which is in Wiltshire, but I have been told that there are no parish registers for Semley for 1620). The reference I was given for this information was BNR 1124. The gentleman who originally collected this information, the late John Whiles of Calne, set up an emigration database for Wiltshire, and this has now been taken over and added to by Robin J. Holley, (e-mail address robinrobin@enterprise.net), who ran an on-line news group called the Wilts-Emi list at Rootsweb. He passed the information on, but has been unable to establish the
source of the reference.

Sorry this is so long, but I hoped it might ring some bells; Gideon's son born 1647 was a Samuel fford; his son was born 1672, also a Samuel; then William Ford b 1708, John Ford b 1742, George Forde b 1788 d 1865.

Please let me know if you think there might be any connection.

best wishes, Moira
