Thomas R. was born on the family homestead, 11 Feb 1859, son of Capt. William H. and Amanda B. (Cory) Forbes. William was a native of Canada. Amanda was the daughter of Holder Cory of Cooperstown, NY. An interesting biography of Capt. William Forbes is contained in the biography of Thomas Forbes.
Thomas was educated in the schools of St. Paul, MN, and entered the Jesuit College of Montreal, Canada, where he remained for two years. He began working as a clerk in a wholesale house of Aubaugh, Finch, and Schaefer, and then for Averill, Russell, and Carpenter, paper manufacturers. In 1880, he became a purser on a steamboat plying between Bismark, ND, and Miles City, MT.In the fall of 1880, Thomas took charge of Layton & Johnson mercantile at Miles City, and subsequently had charge of a store they opened at Buford, MT, for five years.Thomas then operated the first steam ferry boat on the upper Missouri River, and while running it opened a store for the Hedrich Brothers at Mondak, MT, and remained with them until the business was closed.When Roosevelt county was created, Thomas was named county clerk of court.
In May 1903, Minot, ND, Thomas married Miss Elizabeth Windisch, born 2 Feb 1875, Indiana,daughter of John & Sophia (Fiock) Windisch.Elizabeth's brother, William, was a resident of Mondack.Her sister, Mrs. Anna Saylor, lived in Dundas, IL.
