Reuben Reddick Ross was born 17 April, 1830 in Montgomery Co.,TN the son of James and Mary (Barker) Ross. His father was a proffessor at the masonic College in Clarksville, and his grandfather, for whom he was named, was a prominent Baptists leader. The younger Ross, studied under his father prior to his appointment to West Point. Entering in 1849, Ross graduated inn 1853, 51st in his class of 52. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry, Ross served one year in garrison at Newport Barracks, Kentucky. Ross resigned from the army on 25 Jan 1854, to become an engineer for the Memphis and Tennessee Railroad. From 1855 to 1861 he taught school in Clarksville with his father. I have alot on him. Stewart College was just that, a college. There are no records that I have read that speaks of a military class of any sort. But if I do find out there was, I will let you know.
