Polly HITCHCOCK and Esther NORTHRUP-- Wives of Miles FOOTE b.1794 Conn.
Posted by: Raymond Collins (ID *****6372) Date: February 03, 2009 at 17:36:48
  of 2058

I. I have seen many differing and confusing posts about the wives of Miles FOOTE and the children of Miles and his wives.
I am not able to reconcile these posts with the 1800 through 1840 U.S. Censuses.

Question One: Can someone give me the name(s) of the cemetery/cemeteries in which Miles and his wives are buried and what are the inscriptions on their tombstones?

II. However, I can contribute some information that can help us reconcile some of the differences by beginning with what I do know.

One of my four paternal 2g grandmothers is Eleanor Jane DeLONG born 1Sep1817 in the Town of Rotterdam, Schenectady County, New York.
Her death certificate shows her parents were Jacob J. DeLONG and Bay.
[Since Jacob J. DeLONG married Alma FOOTE, I assume the informant used an unknown nickname for Alma.]

Question Two: Was "Bay" a nickname for Alma?

III. Many of the posts, by others, show Miles FOOTE was born 13Sep1774 and that his first wife
was Polly HITCHCOCK born 1779 OF Bethlehem, Litchfield County, Connecticut.
One of the posts states that they were married in Watertown, Litchfield County in 1797.
If Polly's birth and marriage dates also included the month with the year, I'd feel more confident these are correct years and not guesses.
However, this computes to Polly's being a resonable 17 or 18 when she married.

IV. Some of the posts, by others, show Polly died in 1798 and Alma FOOTE was born in 1798.
#1. If this is true, Alma was the first born child of Miles, but Polly possibly died when birthing Alma.

The 1800 U.S. Census shows a Miles FOOT (sic) living in Blenheim, Schoharie County, New York.
Listed are the following:
One male 26 but less than 45 years old. [Actually, Miles was 25.]
Three females less than 10 years old. [Alma born in 1798 and two unknown females.]
One female 26 but less than 45 years old.
[I can only find a North Blenheim, not Blenheim, on an old map.]

Question Three: Were Alma's parents living in Connecticut or New York when she was born?
Question Four: Who were the parents of the two unknown females?
Question Five: If Polly died in 1798, is the adult female in the 1800 Census, Mile's second wife, Esther NORTHRUP?

V. Miles' second, third, fourth, and fifth children were:
#2. Andrew Northrup FOOTE, male, born 16Jan1801 in Jefferson, Schoharie County.
[Thus it seems Miles married Esther in 1799 or 1800.]
#3. Abraham Hitchcock FOOTE, male, born Feb1803.
[Abraham's middle name was in honor of Polly.]
#4. Pulaski FOOTE, male, born 9Oct1804.
#5. Hester Elmina FOOTE, female, born 9Oct1807.
[Since their parents are on the 1800-1840 Censuses, the above four children were probably born in Jefferson, Schoharie County, New York and not Connecticut.]

The 1810 U.S. Census for Jefferson, Schoharie County New York shows the following for Miles FOOT (sic):
1 male 26 but less than 45 years old. [Actually, Miles was 35.]
3 males under 10 years old. [This is Andrew, Abraham, and Pulaski.]
1 female 26 but less than 45 years old. [This is Esther FOOTE, nee NORTHRUP.]
2 females under 10 years old. [This is Hester Elmina and one unknown.]
1 female at least ten but less tha 15. [This is Alma.]

Question Six: Who were the parents of the unknown female and is she one of the two unknown females listed in the 1800 Census?

VI. Miles' #6 born child was Emma FOOTE, female, born 10Aug1810 in Jefferson, Schoharie County.

The 1820 U.S. Census for Miles FOOTE of Jefferson, Schoharie County shows:
1 male 26 but less the 45. [Actually Miles was 35.]
1 male 16 or 17. [Actually Pulaski was 15.]
2 males 18 but less than 26. [Andrew was 19, but Abraham was 17.]
1 female 26 but less than 45 years old. [This is Esther.]
1 female less than 10. [This is Emma.]
1 female 10 but less than 15. [This is Hester Elmina.]
[The two unknown females in the 1800 Censuses are not listed in this census.]

VII. Miles' #7 born child was Isaac Doolittle FOOTE born 1821.
[DOOLITTLE was the maiden name of Miles' mother.]
[Note that Isaac was born 10 or 11 years after the sixth known child, Emma.]

The 1830 U.S. Census for Jefferson, Schoharie County shows:
1 male 50 but less than 60. [Miles was 55.]
1 male under 5. [Who is this?]
1 male 5 but less than 10. [This is Isaac Doolittle.]
1 male 20 but less than 30.] [This is Andrew or Pulaski.]
1 female 50 but less than 60. [This is Esther.]
1 female 20 but less than 30.[This is either Hester Elmina at age 22 or Emma at age 19. I believe this is probably Emma.]

Question Seven: What is the name of the above unknown male?
Is this male an unknown child of Miles and Esther?
Could the census enumerators have listed this person as a male in the 1830 Census and as a female ion the 1840 Census?

[Abraham was living in Blenheim, Schoharie County with his wife (Amy FOOT, nee AVERY), 2 boys and one girl.
The eldest child , a boy, was 10 but less than 15 years old.]

VIII. The 1840 U.S. Census for Miles FOOT (sic) shows:
1 male 60 but less than 70. [Miles was 65.]
1 male 15 but less than 20. [This is Isaac.]
1 female 60 but less than 70. [This is Esther.]
1 female 10 but less than 15. [Who is this?]
1 female 20 but less than 30. [This is Emma.]

Question Eight: What is the name of the above unknown female?
Is this female an unknown child of Miles and Esther?
Could the census enumerators have listed this person as a male in the 1830 Census and as a female in the 1840 Census?

Miles died 28Feb1843 and some posts show Esther died 8July1851.
However, I didn't find Esther on the 1850 U.S. Census.

Question Nine: When and where did Esther die and where is she buried?
Question Ten: Where is Esther listed for the 1850 U.S. Census?
Question Eleven: Did Esther have a previous marriage and the two unknown females in Question #4 were from her previous marriage?
