Good morning Barbara,

Thanks for writing. As I recall, you sent me the newspaper clipping on the Sonnier family that was the key to finding your immediate ancestors. Am I right?

I have a good friend in Birmingham who is a genealogist and who is very active in DAR. Some years ago, she told me my ancestor Philippe Fontenot dit St. Philippe had rendered Patriotic Service (PS) during the Rev. War. She insisted I send for the papers and I did, but I did not join.

More recently, I have carried on an extensive correspondence re. Joseph Fontenot dit Belaire, brother of Philippe. In an effort to learn if Joseph had also rendered PS during the Rev. War, I called my friend who has the DAR PATRIOTIC INDEX. She gave me the names of four Fontenots. Subsequently, I went to the library and found another, Pierre Fontenot dit Bellevue, Henri's brother. Pierre's surname was spelled differently.

Joseph Fontenot dit Bellaire was not listed in the DAR PATRIOTIC INDEX. I feel that Joseph did render PS, so I plan to return to the library this week-end and look some more.

Winston De Ville is a well-known historian and genealogist (F.A.S.G.) from Easton, LA. The Birmingham Library's online catalog lists 30 of his publications and I plan to look at the following:

"Louisiana Soldiers in The American Revolution"
Call #E263.L68 D4 1991

"Louisiana Soldiers in the American Revolution" F380.A2 D4 1993

"Louisiana Troops, 1720-1770" F372.D3 1994

I descend from Francois LeDoux, s/o Pierre LeDoux & Cecile Rondot (Rondeau). Francois was b. in Pointe Coupee, moved to Natchitoches, met & married Marguerite Roujot (Rougeau) and joined the Spanish Militia. Francois does not appear in the DAR Patriotic Index, but his brother, Jean Pierre LeDoux does. Jean Pierre m. Marguerite Barron and remained in the PC area where he joined the PC Militia.

Now to answer your question:

Henri Fontenot dit Bellevue (Sr.) was born Abt. 1753 in Mobile, AL - FL Terr. - rendered Patriotic Service during the Rev. War in LA. The Index lists his approximate age and the name of his wife Marie Louise Doucet.

The papers I received from DAR stated Philippe had rendered aid to the Galvez expedition in the form of supplies. I suspect that the majority of those who rendered PS helped Galvez in the same way. Some were too old to fight - as in the case of one of my husband's ancestors from GA - "he was too old to drive the wagon and team he donated to the Rev. War effort...."

De Ville has another title I hope to look at, if time permits:

"Yo Solo: The Battle Journal of Bernardo De Galvez During the American Revolution" F319.P4 G3413 1978

If young people in school today learned their history by tracing their ancestors, I am convinced they would be a lot more interested.

My grandchildren are fascinated by genealogy research. I went to their school and talked to the children in some of their classes. My entire family is very supportive and has encouraged me to publish. With that in mind, I am editing my very large database. It took me 15 years to do the research and if it takes as long to edit, I may never publish, but I keep trying.

As you can see, I am an early riser and the coffee is ready.

Best regards,
Rosie Morein Well
