Good Morning Linda,
These are my Fontenots. Thanks for writing and thanks for sharing. I have to do my own research in the Birmingham Library. Gratefully, the Birmingham Library has been rated second in the nation for genealogy research.
Creole: Note: Any white person of French or Spanish ancestry, born in a colony. Negroes are not Creoles. Creole has no reference to mixed blood. All Cajuns are Creole, but not vice-versa. Source:"A Dictionary of the Cajun Language" by Rev. Msgr. Jules O. Daigle, M.A., S.T.L.
When I was a young girl, I overheard my father say to my mother, "Cena, un et pas des Cajun, un et des Creole." (I speak the language but don't write it very well.) Daddy was referring to our Spanish and French ancestry. However, Msgr. Daigle has also written that because of so much intermarriage, it is correct to call ourselves Cajuns.
Louis "Grand Louis" Fontenot (Jean Fontenot dit Cadet, Jean Louis Fontenot dit Colin, Joachim Fonteneau, Nicolas) was born Abt. 1753 in Alibamon District, Fort Toulouse, AL and died Bef. 1820 in St. Landry Parish, Mr. & Mrs. Estate dated: 1820 (LSAR: Opel.: 1820). He married Marie Josephe Bellaire Fontenot December 06, 1786 in St. Landry Catholic Church, Opelousas, LA, daughter of Joseph Fontenot dit Bellaire and Marie Brignac. She was born Abt. 1757 in Alabama - residing in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, LA, and died before 1820 in St. Landry Parish.

NOTE: Louis and Marie were first cousins. Their fathers, Jean Fontenot dit Cadet and Joseph Fontenot dit Bellaire were brothers.
Marriage notes for Louis Fontenot and Marie Fontenot:
Marie Fontenot of Alabama (Joseph & Marie Brignac) wid. of Laurent Dupre dit Terrebonne m. 6 Dec. 1786 Louis Fontenot (LSAR: Opel.: 1786). Source: "Southwest Louisiana Records" by Rev. Donald J. Hebert, V. 1-A, p. 317
Both my parents are Fontenot descendants. I am a French-speaking native of Evangeline Parish, Louisiana. Evangeline Parish was created from Imperial St. Landry Parish in 1911. I have lived in Birmingham, AL since 1954, but still have family in Louisiana and visit twice a year.
Best regards,
Rosie Morein Wells
