Hello - I have Matthew Fontaine as 1787-1879 of Hempstead County, Arkansas, who married (1) 1815 with Pauline "Patsy" Johnson (1798-1834) and then (2) 1834 with Rachel Wallace (1808-1860).

Matthew was a child of Joseph Fontaine (1748-1813) of Christian Co., Kentucky, a planter and carpenter, and his wife Mary "Polly" Goode (1754-1812) who were married in 1773.

Joseph was a child of the Reverend Peter Fontaine (1691-1757) of Charles City County, Virginia, minister and planter, who married (1) 1714 with Elizabeth Foureau (1700-1725) and then (2) ca 1739 with Sarah Wade (d. 1784).

Peter and his siblings came to colonial Virginia from Ireland, where their parents had settled after living a brief period in England, after fleeing France after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes when they were persecuted for religious reasons as French Huguenots.

I recommend visiting The Fontaine Maury Society webpage, which has a brief history of the early Fontaine family. The webpage is at:

www.fontainemaurysociety.org

I am the librarian for the society. We have a number of books in the library on the Reverend Peter family and also an extensive bibliography on our webpage.

Hope this is of help!

Cordially,

Brian Nilsson
