Phillippe Fontaine

My grandfather, John Armstrong Brumley, was supposedly born in Kankakee, Illinois on November 8, 1879. However, the story my grandmother told me many years ago was that he was a foundling left on the doorstep of an elderly widow and her daughter. They named him John Armstrong Brumley. (He was not listed on the 1880 Census with this Brumly family.)

My grandmother told me that when he was about seven years old, his birth mother tried to kidnap him. They were told that his real name was Phillippe Fontaine.
I have been unable to substantiate these facts.

However, I just found a Family History 1881 Canadian Census report listing Phillippe Fontaine, age 2 (b. 1879), as being the youngest of six children of Theophile and Adeline Fontaine, Sorel, Richelieu, Quebec.

I would appreciate any help. Thank you.
