There were Dutch sailors/mercenaries stationed in Italian city-states in the 1500s, especially in Venice. This had to do with the power politics and the explorations going on, both of which fostered the development of navies and encouraged trade. (I discovered this on a website about Venice.)I discovered this week that my maternal grandmother is a descendant of Douw Fonda (1700-80) via: - Jellis Fonda - Marigo Fonda - Elizabeth Van Vechten- Elizabeth Ann Mount- James Henry Shelp - Mary Elizabeth Shelp (my grandmother, dates 1875 - 1948, b. Glen, Montgomery, NY). Alice Carmel
