Follis/Foulis/Fowlis - of Scotland??

I am researching the family names found intermarried within our Ydna MOODY (Mudie/Moodie) family trees. The surname of FOLLIS is found a couple of times (see msg. #9965 on the Moody board here). I am wondering if this surname evolved into the spelling of FOLLIS that it has today from the ancient spellings found in very early records going back to the 1500's in Fifeshire at least, of FOULIS or FOWLIS?
If anyone has further info regarding the history of this name or if they have any info that would tie these spellings together, I would be most greatful as I have found these earlier spellings intermarried with MUDIE's/Moodie's in Scotland records as well.
Thank you for any help.
