Ann, my Fogal/Fogel/Fogle antecedents were from Strausburg in the Alsace Lorraine. they immigrated to North America in 1830, landing in Boston. My gggggrandfather Phillip was a gardener. He took the family to Illinois just as that area was being developed for fruit orchards.

We have the ships manifest so we are certain about the date, ship, and port of entry. Later US Census records give us the city of Strausburg.

I was a bit surprised to learn recently that there is also an Irish surname Fogal.
