I am amazed that this question remained unanswered for so long. The change from Forbes to Fobes is a Hollandization which occurred during the Puritan sojourn in Holland.Rev John Forbes,a graduate of St Andrews University,scion of the Forbes Clan and direct ancestor of HRH Diana,Princess of Wales,was the pastor of the Delft Puritan congregation.His son John came to Ameica,and settled at Bridgewater,Mass.I too, am a descendant.
